Terror attack at Army headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri, near Line of Control; intense firing underway

Dont hold your breath people. If Namo was serious, prior to taking office, about taking action against jihadis, he is clearly doing a double take now. I don't think he is one to back down to international pressure (there are no buttons that goras can press on him) but he has realized the capabilities of Indian state... what the termites have done (or prevented from doing) to the integrity of the security apparatus.

Biggest obstacle remains, as always, Lutyens. Dont pray for the departed. They are gone. Nothing can be done about that now. Pray for the destruction of this parasitic cabal. So more lives arent rendered meaningless.

So the suspect arrested for NJ and NY bombings spent a lot of time in Pakistan and is married to a Pakistani woman. Maybe he is an oppressed warrior too just taking up the cause of Kashmir. There is only one country which is the world's biggest terrorist factory. Look at high profile terrorists in last two decades and 90% of them would either have visited Pakistan, been born there or lived/hidden there.

The defence ministry is yet to get fully cracking on the "highly-classified" report of a military committee constituted to pinpoint lapses that led to the Pathankot strike in January and recommend measures to plug gaps in the security ring around military installations.

A day after the Uri attack, defence ministry sources acknowledged that the report of the tri-Service panel, headed by ex-Army vice-chief Lt-Gen Philip Campose (retd), had punched holes in the existing security infrastructure.

The Campose panel, which submitted its report to defence minister Manohar Parrikar in mid-May, undertook a comprehensive audit and formulated upgraded standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all defence installations to prevent fidayeen attacks. "It holds that the security set-up is quite poor in most places, with command and control problems and ambiguous SOPs without specific responsibilities and responses being assigned to personnel," said a source.

The guards at the bases are poorly equipped. Sentries continue to use outdated INSAS rifles which are no match for the AK-47s of terrorists. Most sentries and quick-reaction teams do not have bullet-proof jackets or 'patkas' and night-vision devices," he added.

The recommendations range from the urgent need to install modern "access-control, perimeter security-cum-intrusion detection systems" to providing new weapons, bullet-proof jackets and night-vision devices to personnel guarding the bases.

Defence officials say several steps are being taken to address the issues raised in the report, which includes funds to upgrade security at bases. An over Rs 8,000-crore security plan for the 54 major airbases, for instance, is now being finalised.

But a lot more needs to be done. The Campose panel, for instance, highlights the tardy response systems in place to first act on intelligence alerts and then counter terror attacks. In both Pathankot and Uri, there were advance alerts about possible attacks.

Sources say the committee has recommended revamped and standardised response systems for the Army, Navy and IAF, with upgraded SOPs to assign responsibilities to ensure there is no ambiguity and confusion.

Apart from the need to deploy 'quick-reaction' commando platoons in military establishments, the panel has called for creation of a number of 'commando-trained' companies of the Territorial Army to cover gaps in extra-vulnerable installations. The IAF is already raising 12 additional "flights" of Garud Special Forces to supplement the 15 "flights" of around 900 commandos.

Similarly, a system of random security audits by tri-Service teams is now in place. "This will supplement the existing periodic audits being made more purposeful and accountable," said a source.

So basically our security set is poor , our armed guards are equipped with outdated weapons and we have failed to get adequate response teams in both Pathankot attack and here in Uri despite advance alerts .

Perhaps Modi should have looked to address these short comings instead of going to lunch to Nawaz Sheriff house .

Pak has lost all wars with Ind. That is why it is hiding behind the so called non-state actors and nukes

No one thinks Pak can do anything on its terms. Watch how your generals, who are not probably not even good enough to be peons in Ind army, get a kick on their behinds .... Unlike what you like to imagine, this is not about taking on an equal but punishing Pak and finally putting it in its place

The statements issued on Sunday by the US and UK were telling. Both governments unequivocally condemned the attack but, unlike past years, did not twin their condemnation with appeals for a return to dialogue on the Kashmir issue.

“Both countries realise there is very little hope of Pakistan giving up its support for militant groups,” she says.

That, combined with India’s growing economic clout, has seen greater Indian-US military cooperation than ever before, and Pakistan grow increasingly isolated from its neighbours and the international community. Stopping attacks by militants from Pakistan might be a losing battle, but India is winning the wider diplomatic war.

“The US and the UK have seen so much double-dealing by Pakistan in Afghanistan that they are now far more sympathetic to the Indian position,” MacDonald says.

Guardian

As much as it is hard our best option is going the diplomatic route .It has served us well in last 10-15 years identifying Pakistan as a terrorist state and we should look to amp up the pressure even more now to ensure the world sees through the duplicity of Pakistan using Kashmir as an excuse to supports terrorism .

Going for surgical strikes is simply not practically viable and could easily risk all our gains in the world forum if it results in civilian deaths .And risking an all out war with an unstable failed nation that Pakistan is which has nuclear arms lunatic mentality. Thankfully our politicians have lot more sense .

And the major priority should be improving the security infrastructure to deal with these situations.

Is there anything that stops India from using nukes first?

Yeah, but none of us want to live under the fear of our loved ones being killed by mercenaries from across the border.
