BCCI to cancel India-NZ series?

Recommended Posts

India's on-field success was met with off-field gloom for the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) today, with the Lodha Panel officially sealing their bank accounts for failing to meet the committee's reccomendations. In an alleged knee-jerk reaction, Indian cricket's governing body is currently contemplating on scrapping the on-going New Zealand series, describing it as an 'insult to the sport in India'.

A source close to Sportskeeda confirmed that talks are on within the hierarchy to axe the series midway. Our source said, “It's quite insulting for a governing body which is substantially contributing to the country for their bank accounts to be frozen, we aren't doing anything wrong and if anything a decision to tell the banks to stop funds should have been taken post the series. This makes it exceedingly difficult for us to make the payments, and the only way out is to cancel the series. We haven't officially announced anything, but the committee met today to discuss on how to move forward.”

He added, “I understand the panel feels that we are apprehensive about all the changes, which is not true. There is a certain existing setup within the country and considering cricket, it has a vast impact. Hence, changing everything in that stipulated time is not possible. Of course, we have also mentioned certain things that cannot be done. But you cannot let the country, which is currently playing an international series get affected.”

This statement also comes in the after-match of BCCI allotting specific lumsums to various state associations. The Lodha Panel sent a letter to all banks that they must not pay the associations, if the changes aren't inculcated immediately. According to Indian Express, the decision has already been taken, and we are waiting for an official announcement. However, sources close to Sportskeeda are yet to confirm the matter.

Reacting to Justice LM Lodha committee’s direction to banks to freeze its accounts, a disgruntled BCCI has decided to cancel the ongoing New Zealand series, which has a Test and five ODIs remaining.

According to a senior board official, the board was forced to take this step as its hands were tied. “We have no option other than to call off the India-New Zealand series as our banks have decided to freeze BCCI accounts. We don’t want India to be humiliated in front of the world. How can we function, how can we hold any games now? Who will make the payment? Freezing a bank account is no joke. An international team is here, and there is so much at stake,” a top BCCI official said.

The board decided to take this drastic measure on the day the Lodha panel issued a letter to the banks, urging them to not give BCCI access to funds. “It has come to the notice of this Committee that certain decisions have been taken at the ‘Emergent Working Committee’ meeting of the BCCI on 30th September 2016 to disburse large funds to the various member associations,” the letter stated.

It further said: “As the status report is to be taken up for directions by the Hon’ble Court on Thursday, 6.10.2016, you are hereby directed not to take any steps towards financial disbursement of the amounts as resolved/approved after the direction dated 31.8.2016. Any violation of this direction will be placed before the Hon’ble Supreme Court for appropriate directions.”

The letter was also addressed to BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke, CEO Rahul Johri and treasurer Anirudh Choudhary. “You are aware that by way of this Committee’s direction dated 31.8.2016, no further decisions were to be taken regarding the future apart from routine matters. The disbursement of these amounts are not routine, and in any case, not emergent,” the committee said.

The panel was further furious because the board had missed the first deadline for implementing the committee’s recommendations. “You are also aware that the BCCI has chosen to breach the judgment of the Hon’ble Supreme Court as well as the first set of Timelines set out by this Committee which includes the Fund Disbursement policy to be framed by 30.9.2016.”

This Lodha Panel has to be disbanded.Enough is Enough. The case before the supreme court was to judge whether Srini was a case of conflict of interest, and now SC is trying to run cricket in India through this panel.

What is the qualification of this panel in terms of finance, administration etc?

How can a court start running administration?

SC must first put its own house in order after the Justice Chelameshwar revealations and then direct others.

Kudos to the Modi govt for telling the SC  today that they dont have the authority to direct the Parliament to pass any laws. That is the perogative of the parliament.

Ouch. BCCI should have implemented atleast few changes their reluctance is mind boggling . You either fight them in court or implement them. Supreme Court already gave them a warning. They should have expected this.

They did implement a lot of reforms. But some reforms are simply stupid.

What concern is it of the SC whether the gap between IPL and international matches is 10days or 15 days?

How can the SC ask BCCI  administrators to retire at 70,when we have 90 year old MPs and have had 80 year old PM or CMs?

How can SC ask BCCI to limit term of BCCI office bearers if the terms of the PM/CM/MPs/MLAs isnt limited?

SC has no accountability and their workings has been exposed by Justice Chelameshwar.Laws must be passed to make sure SC doesnt interfere in legislature and executive.

This looks like BCCI trying to turn up the heat on SC and from what I've read they have frozen 2 seperate transactions not their entire account.

BCCI cant afford the outrage of a cancelled series and the spotlight being put back on how the organisation runs

It looks like SC has grabbed hold of BCCIs balls. I am loving this. "SC wants to humiliate India in front of the whole world". :finger: More like they are stopping you from looting the money.

I don't mind BCCI looting money as long as they don't loot mine. I am sure every Indian agrees with that as long as his/her pocket is not targeted.

The main concern is for uniform distribution of money to all states. This is not 90s anymore where couple of strong States get to decide the distribution factor.

I wish sc somehow force bcci to implement  all the reforms eventhough it may cause temporary discomforts. It will only help indian cricket in the long run.

Yup...i totally agree...........supreme court should push the envelope and bring these BCCI arrogant babu's on its knees....

All these guyz are feeding on the BCCI money, as if, its their own business?

For a greater good, couple of series being cancelled is not a big issue.....

Good logic....if good is not happening elsewhere, then let the bad happen everywhere.......No wonder INDIA is not progressing as much as they should.....

I am glad that someone is taking the responsibility of cleaning up the system and you have the problem with it....

When there are 130 crore people, why should 90 year old fool should be working in / driving BCCI.....if it is a private company nobody cares but this organization does not belong to one person....

The Lodha committee had only stopped two Indian banks not to disburse funds from the BCCI accounts to the state associations with regard to two financial decisions taken at the board's emergent working committee meeting on September 30.

They haven't Freezed any bank accounts .Surely anyone with basic common sense can see the difference between stopping two individual transactions and freezing an entire account .

The transactions were

At the meeting on Friday the BCCI decided that all its full members - with the exception of the out-of-favour Rajasthan Cricket Association - would get INR 10 crores as an increment to the state associations' existing infrastructure subsidy of INR 60 crore. The working committee also decided that money received from the broadcaster as compensation for the cancellation of the Champions League T20 would be distributed among the BCCI's full members

The reasoning is pretty clear as well

"It has come to the notice of this Committee that certain decisions have been taken at the 'Emergent Working Committee' meeting of the BCCI on 30th September 2016 to disburse large funds to the various member associations," the Lodha Committee said to Bank of Maharashtra and Yes Bank in an email that was also copied to BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke, treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry and chief executive Rahul Johri. "You are aware that by way of this Committee's direction dated 31.8.2016, no further decisions were to be taken regarding the future apart from routine matters. The disbursement of these amounts are not routine, and in any case, not emergent."

Both are basically BCCI giving bonus to state associations and nothing to do with day today activities or India NZL series .Considering how much nepotism plays a role in BCCI allocating funds to state associations and how much they are swindled by these associations it's a good thing as well till the recommendations and transparency is implemented.

Blatant posturing and lying by BCCI to create controversy to put pressure on Lodha committee .Nothing else really.

As if BCCI would cancel the ODI series which is its cash cow and risk media and public backlash.
