Indians n the fear of being an allrounder

Till date we have had only Kapil a true allrounder n now As win considered as one but that does not tell the entire story, although we have relied on bits n pieces players like Binny, Madan Lal, Prabhakar in the past we have been traditionally skillful in general having batting skills n obvious spins to spin the ball n rarely a batter who can bowl pace.

We have had bowlers who had the ability to bat n could develop into decent contributors with the bat but they did not try enough to to both

Zak, Srinath, BK could all bat n had more skills with the bat then the stats show.

Tendulkar was one allrounder who was reluctant to dream big n bowl more n see himself as an allrounder as he was as good as anyone with his leg spin, all he needed was belief n more bowling.

Sehwag was to me a good offspinner n could be a allrounder as well, BK has the potential, Agarkar was a waste both as a batter n a bowler.

Indians in general are reluctant to push themselves harder n even if they have the ability do not pursue both the trades seriously

Pandya is very promising as he has the right attitude, Irfan wS gifted but was wasted, our domestic captains n teams are reluctant to push n support n allrounder also it's more the bits n pieces guys who get pushed, allrounder need more support n backing initially by the management as it is hard to do both n management should have an eye n vision to look for potential, Ashwin is a freak n so is Pandya also what has helped him is the focus on him thru IPL

^  Let's be honest - Laziness is a big part of it.  Being an all-rounder requires a lot of fitness and hard work.  Anyone with decent batting ability would find it easier to work and polish that rather than put in hard yards in bowler-unfriendly conditions.  Besides - batsmen get all the glory, even if its the bowlers who win you test matches.  There was no incentive to work on your bowling.  Until now.

With the IPL, being an all-rounder is greater than the sum of its parts, and with the financial incentives strongly in place, we should see a bunch of them come through in the next decade - hopefully a couple of them could be Kapil calibre - that would be nice.

Simple the way it works this way in case of a bowling all rounder...

No.1 to No 11 have to battle it out in a crisis or up the run-rate depending on the situation....it goes without saying....just because someone is a No X1 it is no excuse for him to be out swinging out blindly while trying to save a test or keep blocking when quick runs are needed....it so happens that bowling all-rounders have much more skill with the bat and they will get you the valuable runs, but again their primary role is picking up wickets -eg;Ashwin can have some batting failures it can be compensated but his bowling failures will affect us in a big way.

In Case of a batting allrounder simple

usually if you are the 4th or 5th bowler your role is to keep things tight, break a partnership etc...again that goes without saying even if you are the 4th,5th or 6th bowling option.....again just so happens that the better all rounders have ability to produce magic deliveries to get more wickets, sometimes even out bowl the main bowlers...but again their primary role is to get runs on the board eg;There were some matches were the likes of Kallis,Watson didn't even bowl and it did not make a difference.... but had they been out for a duck in that game, their teams would have suffered a lot more.

There is nothing called manufacturing an allrounder-You either have the skill or you don't in both departments, but you need to be good enough to be picked as a specialist in 1 department. Last time we tried to "manufacture" an allrounder-we messed up Pathan who was a world class bowling talent.

For me Tendulkar n Sehwag atleast could be a world class all rounder, Sachin was too scared in many ways for his body n also he changed his game for elbow injury.

Sehwag was used well by Ganguly n other captains surprisingly did not use him, like Dhoni.

They were part-timers who could have been more, but I don't think they'd be batting allrounders like Kallis.

After Warne hadn't seen anyone turn the ball so much n have all much variations like Sachin, but he was stubborn n did not explore his bowling that much, fr Sehwag as well he had a good action, did get drift n dip also could turn the ball, so in both cases it was the players fear of his working on his bowling in Sachin case n in Sehwag case it was captains dis interest
