Jayant Yadav-Is he a long term solution?

While I can understand people bringing up Ishant....here is the thing...Ishant is a fast bowler who can bowl at 140K's.....probably one among say 10....that doesn't justify a super long rope but it is what is....a rare breed.

Jayant on the other hand is a spinner who can bat...I am sure there are 3-4 of those kind in every domestic team.

Sure Jayant might have outshone them to get a chance but,it is pretty evident so far that he can't spin and is batting is not good enough to be in the top-5 which is a must for a batting allrounder.

Why are people forgetting the main context of the thread?

Ok first let me clear up something I always believe in specialists...I have a strong dislike...hate even for bits and pieces cricketers.

Is Jayant a better spinner than Mishra,Chawla,Kuldeep Yadav,Chahal,Rasool,Nadeem etc.-Based on what I have seen don't think so.

Is he purely as a bat better than Nair,Rohit,Pant etc etc...don't think so either.

I am sure Bhuvi or any other specialist bowler can take those 1/2 a wicket per test match and on a minefield will do no worse than Jayant with the bat.

If Jayant improves his batting to be good enough to play in the top 5,sure I see a lot of upside for him but don't think so either.

Test cricket is for specialists not for bits and pieces cricketers.

It actually applies to Ashwin and Jadeja as well, even if they are scoring 50's every other game,as long as they don't pick up wickets they are useless.

Jayant Yadav is more of a batting all-rounder now as he is good with the bat and bad with the ball.

Him batting at No.9 is sort of not utilizing this aspect properly.  He should bat within the top 7.

Another option is trying  Karun Nair in place of  Jayant Yadav.  He is better with the bat and is a very good player of spin.  He is also a decent spinner who can do the support-spinner's job.

I feel that we missed a trick by not trying Aniket Chaudhary and Kuldeep Yadav in the test against Bangladesh.  I wanted this to happen even before that test match.   The team management would have got some idea how good they are at international level and whether there is some value-addition by  playing Kuldeep, a pure bowler, in place of an all-rounder Jayant.

Mishra and Chawla are TTFs.What makes Jayant inferior to Kuldeep,Chahal,Nadeem,Rasool as pure bowler? His FC record is similar or even better in some cases.Reason hes not picking 5fers is coz hes used as a 3rd spinner, bowling lesser overs

As for batting,he clearly shown enough to bat at 7 and allow us to to play 5 bowlers.Already has a test ton batting at 9

You are underestimating the power of strong tail in modern day cricket.Guys looks technically solid and can do rearguard action.Sure didnt happen today but you get the point

To me hes pretty good backup to Ashwin

He got a nice test 100, but not sure about his batting either. After 45 games, his first class batting average is 30. We haven't seen a lot of him, but at this point he seems like a bits and pieces cricketer. We've gone into this test with only 5 batsmen, but then having Ishant and Yadav doesn't really give a lot of balance to the bowling. Let's see how he proceeds in the next few games.

His FC average might have something to do with the fact that his home ground is Lahli?

Hope so. If his batting ability is better than his FC record suggests, I'd feel better about his long term prospects. Interested to see him over a longer run than we have so far.

I dont see the point of him with Ashwin in the team. If Ashwin is injured, then yes he's a suitable replacement.

Exactly...sure he is a suitable replacement as an off spinner who can bowl, but for that he needs to turn the darn ball......He comes across as a bit of a darter to me and has no variations like carrom ball,Doosra etc etc.

As a spinner these days you need mystery weapons...Jayant is a classic domestic bowler....Hope he proves me wrong though but so far not that sold despite the 100 and 50

I don't think he recovered fully from his injury. He was just floating them up at 80 kmph without much control. He was ripping them in at 90 kmph in the England series. The pace off the track makes a big difference. At full fitness, hes a great option in the subcontinent. But looking at his form/fitness, Kuldeep might be better.
