Kohli's top innings on difficult conditions (bowler friendly conditions+bowlers exploiting those conditons)

Recommended Posts

Which inning by Kohli can be rated by good inning on a diffcult pitch or condition (swing/seam)?

He has already showed that he has temperament to score big - 4 double hundreds, score consistently 4 hundreds in a series in Aus, pressure situation - 100 at Adelaide.

But it seems he missed out more often than other Indian batsmen when pitch is difficult to bat on.

Which are his best innings in difficult conditons?

In test matches --

119 and 96  at the Wanderers 2013,  against Steyn, Morkel and Philander on a pitch with pace , bounce, seam movement and some swing in the first innings

75 and 44 at Perth 2012 on a pitch with pace, bounce and seam movement and some swing against Harris, Siddle, Starc and Hilfenhauz.

235 against England in 2016.... that was a turning track and difficult to bat on.

141 at Adelaide 2014. It was a 2nd innings pitch and Lyon was getting turn. Chasing a big target while scoring fast was not easy.

200 in Antigua 2016 where the pitch was green and the fast bowlers on either side were getting a lot of life out of the pitch.

103 against England in 2012 at Nagpur.

45 against NZ in Kolkata 2016.... it was a green track with the ball bouncing unevenly and seaming around with Boult and co. bowling.

49 not out in Rajkot 2016 against England...2nd innings with the pitch providing uneven bounce to spinners on the 5th day and wickets falling around him.

In LOIs --

49 vs Pakistan in Asia Cup 2016 ... on a green seaming pitch with others failing

92 from 107 balls  against Australia 2017 .... pitch was 2 paced, some movement early on and it was a low scoring match  where batting was difficult.... Cummins, NCN bowling

There are some other LOI knocks but I don't follow LOIs as closely as I follow tests

200 against England at Mumbai - really? England scored 400 in first inning and India scored 600+ with 3 hudreds. If that is a difficult piitch to bat on then all pitches can be considered as difficult in India.

Nagpur 2012 was a difficult pitch to score, but a difficult pitch to survive. It was slow but if you didn't drive much you could bat. It didn't offer help to bowlers.

Any pitch where batsman scored 200 with others scoring 100 in same inning can't be difficult pitch to bat on for question in OP.

I am talking about pitches where everyone else finds it difficult to bat on and team doesn't post huge totals. For ex - first 3 tests against SA at home, tests against SL, 2011 series in WI, last Eng tour, first test in SA.

His 103 vs England at Nagpur test 2012 is easily my favourite knock of his and also his best innings in tough conditions.

He suppressed himself and played a brand of cricket which doesn't come to him naturally.

that was a pretty flat pitch. had nothing for spinners or pacers.

That wanderers pitch didn't have much seam much after the initial few overs.Oace and bounce ? Yes .

But not much in terms of seam movement.

The Adelaide wicket was nowhere near a tough wicket.Indact pretty good for a 4 day wicket. We lost because umpires and poor shot selection screwed us up.

The Mumbai wicket were scored 600+and England 400+ is tough conditions ? Seriously

That is incorrect.

I watched that match with particular interest as our entire young batting line-up  was being tested for the first time outside Asia in a test match ....against the top notch S.A. bowling attack away from home.

I watched that match too. After the first few overs there wasn't much sideways movement .
