  1. 1 ) Choosing too many short medium-fast bowlers and probably instructing the lone fast bowler to bowl at a reduced pace -- I had pointed it out repeatedly ... too many short medium pacers don't work in international cricket. Most teams use one medium-paced swing bowler these days ... but too many do not work. Our pace attack looked very ordinary. Not a single specialist bowler chosen who can hit the deck hard and get bounce and seam movement. No variety at all. I found this fact amazing. 2 ) Choosing Raina for his ability to bowl 2 or 3 overs per match -- He has not been chosen in ODIs for a long time because his current ability / form is not good for this format. To choose him as a batsman because we need a 6th bowler is again poor logic. 3 ) Dhoni -- He is the super duper star who apparently can't be dropped based on non-cricketing reasons. But he is losing his hitting power day by day along with his confidence to try hitting big shots. But still hanging on to his spot despite a very low SR for a finisher, of only 84, in the last 3 years. He batted long in both the 2nd and 3rd ODIs but managed pathetic strike rates of 63 in both the matches 4 ) Not allowing Rahul to settle down at No.4 and dropping him arbitrarily -- I beleive this guy has the game to solve a part of our middle-order problems. A fabulous hitter who can hit the big shots with ease against both pacers and spinners. But is also a classical batsmen who does not have to slog to achieve the aforesaid. 5 ) Playing an unfit Bhuvi in the last ODI -- P.S -- a ) Rahane, Rayudu and Pandey are our back-up middle order batters in ODIs according to our batting coach, Bangar. So, future selection faux pas are already planned. b ) Rohit's slow, often super slow, starts is also a big problem but this topic is about selection issues ... and he has not come to the stage where he merits dropping.

Poor squad and team selections have cost us the ODI series in England

Siraj has bowled very well against the Lions. Has picked up 7 wickets in 1.5 innings. And 15 wickets in the 2 four day matches on this A tour. Rajpoot has also performed well. But he got injured in the first innings itself and could not bowl in the entire 2nd and part of the 1st innings against the Lions This has affected our overall bowling too as it is difficult to play with 2 seamers in England. He picked up 5 wickets in the first match he played. The performances of our pacers in the 50-over A tour matches was really good. Chahar and Khaleel stood out in terms of consistency of performances.

Sundar's ability to hit the big shots is not bad. And this aspect would improve further with age.
  4. Saini bowled exceptionally in the Ranji semi final and did well in the final too. He is a bowler who combines high pace, accracy and seam movement both ways.
  5. Not picking Siraj in the test squad is a big mistake ... since he is in such pristine form with the red ball in these conditions.
  6. Our team management mixing up formats as usual Playing with the red ball on green or greenish surfaces is a completely different beast to playing with the white ball on flat tracks. They should know it more than us. Why not 2 practice matches in these 14 days ! Preparing properly for away test tours seems to be the least of our priorities from 2011 onwards.
  7. The commentators were surprised that we are playing just 1 practice game before the test matches ... although we have 14 days inbetween. Why are we messing up our test preparations again like SA despite having so much time !!

Bhuvi kumar ....on flat tracks without swing.

We choose our ODI teams based on IPL performances, which is played in the T20 format. ( Until it comes to Rahul ) Most of our ODI selection faux pas are due to this. Think of questions regarding ODI selections from this point of view and you will get the answers. Our team management do not have the ability to demarcate between these 2 formats. This has lead to Pandey playing T20Is and Raina and Rayudu being chosen for the ODI squad. Same with Bhuvi ... top T20 bowler ... so automatic choice in ODI team irrespective of performances in this format.
  9. They can tell the range in terms of weeks. After that it depends on the individual's constitution.
  10. Opinion is divided on this issue. But why Shardul ? Even if Bumrah were to be rested, and with Rajpoot injured ... why not pick Siraj and Saini.
  11. Only surgeons can tell us the exact timeline after knowing about the nature of his injury and the surgery.
  12. He had surgery on 5th July. That means he has 35 days to get fit for the 2nd test.

I think they are trying to follow the Australian model of the late 1990s and early 2000s. But forgetting that 1. Fast bowlers were still fast tracked. 2. More ready players were chosen irrespective of age. They did not pick old players for the sake of it, even if they were mediocre ... like we did it with old Yuvi, older Raina, old Gambhir, Parthiv, Rayudu etc.
  14. That's a worry after seeing Bhuvi in the 3rd ODI ... I am hoping they learn from it.

This kid's dad has a better chance of playing for India under the current regime.
  16. Looks like Rajpoot is injured. And Siraj is picking wickets for fun in all the 4 innings he has played for India A in the four day games in England. Siraj has 15 wickets so far in 2 matches with 7 more wickets to go. How is Shardul selected over him ?
  17. Ganguly is one of the few men in Indian cricket who knows how to pick youngsters with special talent , back them, motivate them and mentor them. Kohli , on the other hand, does not understand anything about mentoring young talent.
  18. 1. Good squad overall. 2. Good to see no Rohit. 3. Very happy to see Pant included. Deserved it thoroughly. 4. Why Shardul Thakur ? Why is he this default backup option with so many better pacers around ? Rajpoot would have been the best option ... and if not then Siraj. This one is a poor choice. 5. Very happy to see Bumrah in the squad. This may mean that " him missing 3 tests was a rumour ". We need his extra pace, bounce and accuracy used in an enforcer's role.

Pandya's consistency with the bat needs to improve and I like the idea of trying him up the order at 5 or 6. Trying Sundar or Krunal in the top 7 should have been done earlier. I am not sure about Chahar or Thakur's batting abilities at No.7. But, if they have the ability, it would definitely strengthen our bowling.
  20. All English pacers bowling 130 to 140 k mostly. Haven't seen much real pace yet. Only occasional quick deliveries by Plunkett.

Yes, they do. Both did very well in this year's 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy. Khaleel performed really well in the 20 over SMA Trophy too. This lead to the both of them being picked for our 50-over A team touring England a few days back. Khaleel was a top performer there too. Prasidh impressed in the IPL. Both are tall quick bowlers with death bowling skills. Prasidh is good upfront too with ability to swing the ball ... whereas Khaleel is better at the death while providing a left-arm option. Rajpoot's death bowling has been good for over 15 months now.

Ideally, I would try the group below as specialist pacers in ODIs. Bumrah, Bhuvi, Shami, Rajpoot, Khaleel and Prasidh. ( But Shami's fitness to play ODIs regularly in not known. ) Rotate the group with so many matches going on. We would like to find a partner for Bumrah who has the potential to take wickets upfront as well as bowl at the death while maintaining decent ER ... One of Rajpoot, Khaleel or Prasidh may provide the answer.
