I read an article the other week about the size of these porn sites and the % of traffic for all of the internet they account for, its quite unbelievable.

I am a member at IBF and an ISP owner posts there, he said that an estimated 60-70% of ISP traffic goes to video porn sites.

Given their huge scalability needs, they had little choice in moving from RDBMS to a NoSQL database like Redis. Classical RDBMSes quickly become bottleneck or Single point-of-failure in such high-traffic sites.

But RDBMS still have a lot of value in them. Facebook uses MySQL and so does Twitter. Twitter recently open sourced it's MySQL secret sauce.

Agreed. Data consistency, transactional semantics et al is a great value but at the cost of scalability. But sites like Facebook/twitter are testimony to the fact that RDBMSes would be around for some time.
