  1. Before start of semi-finals round, some considered such clash as contest between top 2 Asian teams while some considered it huge mismatch between two opponents. Now one thing for sure, when India take on Bangladesh on today at Edgbaston cricket ground, Birmingham, very few passionate fans would be able to relax with newly generated rivalry between two teams which has been constantly fuelled by statements, sentiments of fans and players as well as social media in recent times. Head to Head: India 25, Bangladesh: 5 In ICC tournaments: India 2, Bangladesh: 1 Bangladesh will look to win this match and get a place in final of an ICC tournament for the first time while India will continue their campaign to retain their title. Key Players India 1. Shikhar Dhawan - Probably one of the best batsman in the world when it comes to ICC tournament. He is already the highest run getter in this tournament and scored over 1000 runs at avg of 70 with 5 100s. 2. Virat Kohli - Captain and most prized wicket in LOIs. He acknowledged the strength of the opposition and will be well aware of areas when Bangladesh will hit hard. 3. Hardik Pandya - If India has to get to big total after regular strategy of starting caustiously then he has to play a role as big hitter as well as 5th bowler 4. Bhuvneswar Kumar - He will crucial in stopping Bangladeshi openers especially Tamim who has been in good form. 5. Bumrah - India needs to make sure that they do well at death Bangladesh 1. Tamim - One of the best all format opener in the world. He has been in very good form recently and Bangladeshi batting depends a lot on how he performs. 2. Shakib - Best ODI all rounder. He has been off-colour for some time, but in last match he showed why he is rated highly. He is probably best Bangladeshi player in history and can be very good with both bat and ball. He scored a match winning 100 against NZ few days back. 3. Mahmudullah - Scored a brilliant 100 against NZ in last match to save Bangladesh from a difficult situationa and propel them into semis of the tournament. 4. Mashrafe Mortaza - His captaincy has been huge difference so far. When NZ were looking to post a big total, he master stroke of bringing Mosaddek Hossain into the attack proved to be turning point. Whatever success BD has acheived so far, can be attributed to his captaincy too. Weaknesses India need to find wicket taking options in middle overs. This is one area where opposition can hurt them and as long as they manage to plug this hole it has been very difficult to dominate this Indian bowling line up who have decimated SA and Pakistan earlier. Slow opening can be a concern, but they have been using this strategy for quite some time and they have confidence in their middle order to provide necessary acceleration Bangladesh had weakness in their batting as it was dependent on Tamim for quite some time. Other batsmen haven't been in great form. Other issue which they might face in this match is their spinners who are generally ineffective against India. Mustifizur Rahman hasn't been in same form as he did at the start of his career. 300th Match Yuvraj Singh, who has been one of the biggest match winner for Indian in LOI is playing his 300th match.
  2. INDIA VS SOUTH AFRICA , OVAL 1500 IST | 0930 GMT | The equation is simple. The winner goes through, the loser goes home. A virtual quarter final between the defending champions and No.1 ranked team. The two teams expected to progress comfortably from the group have ended up fighting for a spot in the Semi Final.Who would have expected that eh? Particularly both India and South Africa thrashed Pakistan and Srilanka in their first game respectively. India came into the tournament with a whirlwind of controversy with alleged fall out in the dressing room between Kohli and Kumble. But showed no effects of it as they we thrashed Newzea land and Bangladesh in the warm ups .Then turned it up a notch and thumped arch rivals in the first game. Then came the horror show against Srilanka were we scratched our way to 320 and watched the inexperienced Sri Lankan batsman roost home without a trouble in the world . The last time we got knocked out of ICC tournament in group stage was the 2009 CT .So there is considerable know-how in the team to handle the pressure. The good thing with our batting is every one looks is great form. The bad thing? None of them are truly scoring at the rate modern ODIs require. Particularly when it comes to setting targets so our best option may to bowl first and unleash the beast Kohli while chasing. When it comes to South Africa themselves are a batting first team. Their record in chasing 250+ is pretty bad and is only better than Pakistan so De Villiers prefers to bat first and defend whenever they win the toss. And we all know how good they are when it comes to handling the pressure of Knock out match. So perhaps that might work to our advantage. Oval has been the flattest surface of the tournament so far. Both England and Srilanka successfully chased 300+ totals here in the tournament so far.But as a caveat this will be played on the same surface which was used for India-Srl game. So expect some wear and tear and help for spinner and even reverse swing. Weather is clear thankfully and no interruptions are expected. Team news : India is likely to bring in Ashwin into the XI after the failure of the bowling attack against Srilanka.Afterall Ashwin tormented South Africa in the 2016 test series with a bowling average of 11 and sure to have left some mental scars there. He also had a very good game against them in the 2015 World cup game with a 3 for 40.SA also have 3 Left handers in the top six which makes his selection even more pertinent. Umesh Yadav or Jadeja looks the likeliest to miss out if Ashwin is included.Though Ravi Shastri suggested Ashwin might be bought in for Kedar Jadhav.Regardless of how good he is Mohd Shami looks set to warm the bench again. South Africa are likely to drop Parnell after his two poor outings .To be fare I have no idea how he even played the first two matches or even how he got into their squad in the first place. He seems to be Ishant Sharma version of South African cricket. De Villiers is struggling with a hamstring niggle but is is very unlikely he will miss the match. Likely XIs : 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt.), 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 R Ashwin, 11 Jasprit Bumrah 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 David Miller, 6 JP Duminy, 7 Chris Morris, 8 Andile Phehlukwayo 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran Tahir
  3. Match time : 1500 IST | 1030 local | 0930 GMT Preview: Going into this encounter, India will be the firm favourites. After a thumping win against Pakistan it is difficult to see any weaknesses in the side.India have settled on an ODI formula that teams have struggled to upset for now. They are unambitious in the opening 10 overs, venturing no more than 49 during the first Powerplay on average, since the last World Cup. Then, typically with Virat Kohli at the crease, comes a sustained middle-overs surge which yields screeds of brisk but risk-free runs, which form the backbone of the innings. Then, with Yuvraj Singh, Hardik Pandya or MS Dhoni marshalling the death overs, the team eclipses 300 and set themselves up in an imposing position. There is quality in India's attack too, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar gleaning swing with the new ball, and Jasprit Bumrah closing innings out. And whatever the present situation between coach Anil Kumble and captain Kohli, on-field performance does not appear to have been affected yet. On the other hand, led by Angelo Matthews, the young brigade of Sri Lanka do not look confident. However, they will be hoping to make a dent into the Indian teams confidence. With Lasith Malinga coming back in the squad it will be a massive boost for Sri Lanka as he also brings in tons of experience. While the young side from the island nation may play with a do-or-die attitude, it may also go against them as the chances of succumbing to the pressure remain high. Injuries an Suspension: Upul Tharanga is suspended for the match due to slow over rate in SA match. Chamara Kapugedara injured himself at training on match eve and the team management will wait for the results of an MRI scan before making the final call. Good news for Srilanka is Angelo Mathews is fit again and slot in ,in place of Tharanga .But he is unlikely to bowl.India has no injury concerns Likely XIs: India : 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 MS Dhoni (wk), 7 Kedar Jadhav, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Jasprit Bumrah Sri Lanka : 1 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 2 Kusal Perera 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Asela Gunaratne, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Seekkuge Prasanna, 9 Suranga Lakmal,10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Nuwan Pradeep Stat that matters: WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWLW (Yeah thats our record in ICC 50 overs tournament since losing to Saffers at Nagpur in 2011 ) The last time a team other than India/Australia won a 50 over ICC trophy was Windies in 2004 Conditions: Signs are that the surface might be a little seam-friendly early on, but there are likely to be plenty of runs nonetheless. The weather is forecast to be cloudy but dry, with the temperature hovering around the high teens. So chances of rain playing spoilsport is unlikely. Updation : The chances of the match being rainout is unlikely. There is no prediction of rain only cloudy weather throughout the day. http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc-champions-trophy-2017/content/story/1101759.html
  4. Angelo Mathews admitted that Sri Lanka are the clear underdogs ahead of his team's must win Champions Trophy game against defending champions India on Thursday (June 8). India are top of Group B after their comprehensive win over arch-rivals Pakistan while Sri Lanka are third after suffering a heavy 96-run defeat at the hands of South Africa. Thursday's game at The Oval is a must win one for Sri Lanka and Mathews underlined that it will be a tough game against a well balanced Indian side. "As you know, they are a force in world cricket no matter where they play. They've played fantastic cricket over the past few years, especially in the last couple of years. They've been tremendous in all conditions. It's very hard to beat them unless we are on top of our game. We will all have to pull our socks up and give a great performance tomorrow," Mathews conceded. While India's batting has always been strong, their bowling at present looks sharp, making them one of the tournament favourites. "Their batting line-up has always put teams under pressure. This current bowling line-up is quite different. They're one of the best in the world. They have got a nice balance of spin and pace and they're all different to each other. That's a fantastic bowling attack," said Mathews. Although The Oval is a neutral venue, tickets for the game was sold out well in advance and Mathews is aware of the support the Indian team will get. "The Indians are everywhere and they keep following the team. They are so passionate about the game, and they love their players, and they keep supporting. We don't have Sri Lankans as much as the Indians in London, but they all come over to witness a great game of cricket." Sri Lanka have been plagued by injuries the whole of this year and there was further trouble as middle order batsman Chamara Kapugedera was ruled out of the tournament after hurt his right knee while doing fielding drills on the eve of the game. They have already announced that Danushka Gunathilaka will replace him after the ICC Event Technical Committee approves the replacement. http://www.cricbuzz.com/cricket-news/95081/icc-champions-trophy-2017-india-vs-sri-lanka-cricket-angelo-mathews-wary-of-fantastic-india Mathews hasn't played any ODI cricket since August last year and has not played any international cricket since January after hurting his ankle during the tour of South Africa. He missed Sri Lanka's first game against South Africa due to the ankle strain. He is still unable to bowl and that will upset the balance of the team. "It does upset the balance a little bit. If I could bowl my ten overs that's a huge thing for the team and we have to now come up with some plans to cope with the strong Indian batting line-up." To make matters worse for Sri Lanka, they do not have the services of their most experienced batsman Upul Tharanga. Sri Lanka's vice-captain led the team in the first game in the absence of Mathews and was suspended for two games for maintaining a slow over rate. "We were warned by the umpires seven times. I do feel for Upul. It's a very tough job on the field for the captain. He has got to look into so many things -- tactics, bowling changes, field setting. So the rest of the players have to support them. Now you see most of the teams are playing with four seamers and they have not had an issue. We played only three seamers and we've had an issue. That has been addressed and it will not happen again." http://www.cricbuzz.com/cricket-news/95081/icc-champions-trophy-2017-india-vs-sri-lanka-cricket-angelo-mathews-wary-of-fantastic-india
