Which 3 new pacers need to be groomed as possible replacements wth a view to WC19

Recommended Posts

Starting from Asia Cup till World cup indian selectors and team management must zero in on those 3 new pacers who should be in the team 15 and also be given chance in ODI & T20 matches and then select the best 2 out of them in WC final 15.

The selection should be to have a solution for -

1. weakness of current pacers - Inability of Bhuvi to take wickets upfront if pitch is not responsive . Other options - Umesh -Wayward .Shami -inconsistency/fitness issue

2. cover the base if any one of 2 of the best pacers are not able to play .-  Need to be able to control end overs

3. will the new pacer be of help to prepare our batters against others teams' pacers by playing him in Nets ? - Our weakness against Left hand pacers - the obvious one as of now.

4. will the new pacers be able to bowl  upfroint - ?.

5. Have they shown ability to take wickets  upfront ?

6. Do they have tools/ skills  to avoid hammering in the first 10 overs ? May need below skills - Height to get bounce , change of pace which cannot be easily picked up ( knuckle ball or slower ball but with normal arm speed and no change in action), subtle change in pace & height of ball - i.e. normal speed length balls and slightly slower leg cutters .  Normal Bouncers , Slow Bouncers , Off cutters hitting the deck with varying speeds , Yorkers , wide yorkers. intelligence to guess batter's moves and respond accordingly.

This is very important . Most of the openers of various teams now have practiced with bowling machines so much that just pace does not bother them at all. You bowl length - they will hammer you in front of the wicket , Short of length - gets pulled , short balls - cut, hook .

Just watch the way Roy,Bairstow, Hales , Munroe, Guptill, Ausiie openers , Even WI openers , Fakar in CT final come at bowlers in the first 10 overs .

You need to have skill to make them mistime their shots and a bit unpredictability else will be taken to cleaners .

Actually a mystery spinner would be far better option in first 10 overs from one end .

7. Do they have skill to bowl at the death - should have options in his arsenal with types of deliveries as mentioned in point no.6 above .

8. Do the new pacers  add a new dimesion to your attack ?  - A left arm pacer , very good swing exponent etc.

Now lets see from whatever we have seen of A team pacers so far, who ticks most of these ?

1. KHALIL AHMED :-

In my opinion Khaleel should be the first choice  why ?

1. Adds a new dimension to attack - being a Left arm quick.

2. Has shown skills to bowl at death  - But will have to perfect it.

3. Will be very handy as a left arm quick for our batters to practice . That will also improve Khaleel's bowling as he will be bowling to some world class players and iron out his short coming for next 9 months.

4. Can he avoid hammering in  first 10 overs - Bit suspect but seems to be economical recently. May not have skillsets right now but has some advantages to start with

     a. left arm angle.

     b. Height to get more bounce.

     c.  Has some variations of deliveries already.

     d. Bowls yorkers rather well.

5. Can he bowl upfront -  too little exposure so far -again not very sure .

But  as a leftie  brings a different angle , has pace.

    - Should bring in subtle changes in pace - may be cutters , knuckle ball .

    - Over the wicket bowling at pace to avoid hitting arc of batsmen by bowling at their feet , also bowl wide yorkers/ widw full length balls .

6. Ability to take wickets upfront -  Not a great record so far. So does not tick this box as of now.

7. Cover for Bhuvi & Bhumra  to control end overs -  Has shown ability to bowl at the death . But long way to go

2. PRASIDH KRISHNA :-

1. Adds a new dimesion to attack -   Not really . So does not tick the box.

2. Has shown skills to bowl at death  - Shown glimpses in IPL. Encouraging signs . - so  ticks the box almost

But seems intelligent , Did see bowling some full pitched deliveires which suddenly dips - a very very good delivery to have. Bravo is the              master of this ball. Bowls full pitched delivires well.

want him to perfect slower bouncers , off cutters hitting the pitch - Due to his height these could be very very good options for him as batters may not be able to make out the height  & pace of the deliveries.

Should develop leg cutters including slowish leg cutters - with his height these deliveires will have an unhittable heght as well as deviation so cannot line up to hit. Hope he takes help from Venky -  who really had mastered them.

3. Will he be very handy  for our batters to practiceNo Novelty as such . So does not tick the box .

4. Can he avoid hammering in  first 10 overs - Bit suspect - Seems to be leaking runs .  May not have skillsets right now but has some advantages to start with

     a.  Height to get more bounce.

     c.  Has some variations of deliveries already.

     d. Ability to pick wickets early - Shown promise

5. Can he bowl upfront -   not very sure .

But  has height and bounce .

    - Should bring in subtle changes in pace - may be leg cutters , knuckle ball .

   6. Ability to take wickets upfront -  Has a better record  so far .  Will consider as ticking the box .

7. Cover for Bhuvi & Bhumra  to control end overs -  Has shown some ability to bowl at the death . But long way to go

  3.  Mohammed Siraj , Saini , Shivam Mavi & Kamlesh Nagarkoti  :-

For the third option i would consider  these 4 and my first choice will be Kamlesh if he is fully fit .

      Kamlesh Nagarkoti:-

       Positives  -

          - Terrific pace-  seam movement .

         -  Great fielder.

         -  Bats a bit .

         - Can be a good bet at death bowling

      Negatives -

          - Injury prone .

          -  Inexperience .

       Shivam Mavi :-

         Positives -

         -  Consistent Pace - seam movement.

         - Good fielder

         -  Can be an option upfront .

        Negatives -

         -  Leaks too many runs .( Too small a sample)

          -Inexperience .

        Mohd Siraj :

        Positives -

         - Ability to pick up wickets .

         - Bounce , Pace & seam movement.

 Negatives -

         -  Leaks too many runs

        -  Suspect temperament .

    Navdeep Saini :

        Positives -

         - Accurate & Economical  .

          Negatives -

           - Inability to pick wickets

           - Does not tick most of the other parameters .

So i would go for Khaleel as no.1 , Prasidh as No.2 & Nagarkoti ( if fit)  as No.3 .

Would like comments from ICFERS  and their list of 3  new pacers and the order of preference.

Khaleel, Prasidh & Nagarkotti are very raw. They are not even in the playing 11 of their state team.

But they are very talented & we may see all three of them break in to national team soon.

My only concern is that they don't go Nathu Singh way & stay fit.

Khaleel & Prasidh are already earmarked as they are getting selected in A teams.

Plan is to include them always in the team 15 for the next 9 months , give chances here & there , assess their performance

and pick the best . Hence not considered how much they have played . Those 9 months are really the period for improvement.

Appreciate if 3 possible naes are suggested  .

Main considerations ...

upfront wicket taking ability,

general wicket taking ability,

low economy rate,

death over skills,

bounce and pace,

A-team and B-team performances

Recent form

I would try only Khaleel and Prasidh.

Khaleel

--  Is economical upfront

--  Great in the death overs with good yorkers and slower balls.

--  Is in great form in the 50 over format this year. Picking wickets and containing runs.

--  Is a left armed

-- Is an accurate, tall and bouncy bowler who bowls a heavy ball ... such pacers are very difficult to score off.

--  Can be genuinely fast in some matches.

--  Has done superbly for India-A in the 50 over format.

Prasidh

--  Is a wicket taker upfront.

--  Decent death bowling skills.

-- Tall, bouncy and bowls a heavy ball.

--  Is sharp.

-- Can bowl outswingers upfront.

-- Performing superbly for India-A and B this year and is in very good form the whole of 2018.  Picking up loads of wickets.

Siraj is too wayward in 50 over format as of now.

Saini is more of a test match bowler.

Mavi and Nagarkoti need one more year atleast,  to get ready for senior cricket.  Some A-team cricket too.

I like Rajpoot ... but he is not even in the India B team for the 50 over format ... showing that he is not being considered for this format.

Kaul

Acc to our selectors, will only knw in asia cup n WI home series if they are looking at other options

I am more optimistic now than before .

We are seeing what Kaul can offer as he is playing in the same tournament along with Prasidh , Khaleel & Siraj.

He is getting thrashed in his 2nd & third spell now.

yea lets hope

In Asia Cup , the hurdle for winning will be Pak.

Most probably we will face 3 left arm quicks from them in each match.

hope we are not caught off guard but better prepare in nets facing Left arm pacers in whatever time available .

Hence  wishing Khaleel to be in 15 member team atleast.
