If he fails in his first game all knifes will be out. Must prove he has talent to surpass Kohli.

Yes  that's the problem . Its not easy to succeed straight away at top level at such young age without a decent domestic experience  especially in overseas tours. .

Not sure how many of ICFERS have a realistic assessment of that . Few low scores and MC, BC , rona dhona will start making fun  .

At a level below , they look good but then few chinks will get exposed at top level ruthlessly. Then they need to go back again and rectify it and come back again.

Fact that he has made it to test team is due to his exceptional talent and all in Indian set up believe in that.

Am sure he will do decently in SC countries  but i would be happy if he shows ability to stay  in overseas conditions where he will be tested with bit of seam movement , bounce , pace and relentless accurate pace attack.  Even if does not score a lot but looks decent and is able to stick it out in his first 8-10 tests , he would serve very well for next 10 years .

If i am not wrong , even Babar Azam had a similar journey. Was piling up mountain of runs at U19 level. Could not make it big at top level for 3 + years. But  then he worked on his weaknesses and has become the player that he is now.

More importantly, it is important that Kohli and Co. show that maturity in handling Gill and other young talented kids' careers.

Every young player will need some time to transition from pre-international to internarional cricket.  Even Kohli looked like a fish out of water in his first test series in the WI, and that was after he had experience of playing LOIs for 3 years.

This has to be kept in mind by the Team management while handling any young kid.

Quite clear that Rohit is the first choice opener. Gill be warming the benches.

Better for him to be released from the Test team (after the 12 has been picked for each test) and play more FC cricket as an opener. We have seen too many young players losing their form and confidence waiting for a chance while the TM keeps them away on one pretext or the other. Can’t let that happen to Gill.

Yeah I think its the case of believing in the talent to come through. Giving them set number of games to prove themselves before dumping them. If the talent is really worth the time they will come through by giving outstanding results.
