IPL 2020 likely to take place behind closed doors

It is now a strong possibility that IPL 2020 will take place behind closed doors, in light of the coronavirus threat, with the Indian government indicating it will not stop sporting events from taking place as long as they adhere strictly to health-ministry guidelines discouraging mass gatherings.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) a pandemic.

The announcement was made on Thursday by Kiren Rijiju, India's Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports. It remains to be seen how this development will affect the remaining matches of the ODI series between India and South Africa, which began on Thursday in Dharamsala. The second ODI is scheduled to be played in Lucknow on March 15, and the third ODI in Kolkata on March 18.

On March 5, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare put out an advisory on mass gatherings, which said: "Experts across the World have advised to reduce mass gatherings to avoid the spread of COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus disease. In view of above, it is advised that mass gatherings may be avoided or possibly be postponed till the disease spread is contained.

"In case any such mass gatherings are organized, States may take necessary action guide the Organisers on precautions to be taken as per the risk communication material already sent so as to avoid any Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases and Influenz Illness (ILs) including Covid-19."

Rijiju said the guidelines on mass gatherings had been overseen by a group of ministers formed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"All international events in India have been cancelled," Rijiju told reporters outside Parliament. "But we are telling sports federations, we are telling all to comply with the guidelines issued by the Health Ministry and formulated by a group of ministers which is constituted by the Prime Minister. So any sports body in India should ensure [the guidelines are followed]."

Asked specifically about the IPL, which is scheduled to start on March 29, Rijiju indicated that fans are likely not to be allowed at the grounds. "We are not stopping the game," he said. "We are just telling to ensure that there is no mass gathering. Precautionary step is very important for the health of the country."

Considering that IPL matches are usually attended by several thousand fans across all venues, Rijiju said the organisers would need to ensure that safety of the "people" is not put at risk. "That is the guideline," Rijiju said. "Health of the nation is more important than anything. If matches happen the organisers would need to put in place all infrastructure including screening machines. You cannot hold a match without that.

"We are not saying anything to stop the match. We are just saying: even if they go ahead with the match, ensure that guidelines are followed. People's health cannot be put into danger."

The atmosphere is the greatest usp of IPL, without fans it would be like the PSL in UAE. Even the foreign players will not be here till April 15th which may well be extended as the spread would be greater by then. It's going to be a drag really if they go ahead with this. Rather postpone/cancel.

I was reading an article about the Summer Olympics and some of the experts are of the opinion that even keeping the games going behind closed doors doesn't really help. The Athletes village, the gyms and practice tracks, the various modes of transport to get to the stadii  and the mess facilities will have to be sanitized every 4-6 hours to check the spread of contagion.

By using the same line of reasoning, wouldn't we too need to sanitize all hotels/ travel routes, vehicles and kitchens. And unlike the Olympics, the IPL is a multi city event. Seems like a very big ask.

I'm not infectious disease specialist or epidemiologist but I'm in medical field and we discuss this issue on daily basis at my work place. Based upon my research and information, IPL does not need to be cancelled and also does not need to be played in empty stadiums. As of now and ( hopefully in coming months too ) India is not in "rezone zone" and all the precautions should be taken according to risk involved.

Stadium during IPL don;t need to be empty but the entry should be restricted. If in a stadium of 60,000 capacity 8000-10000 people are allowed , spaced out, everyone should take extra time to sanitize his/her hand or wear masks if needed, IPL can be played in front of limited number of spectators . Test matches even in India are played with less number of spectators .

Safety comes first, but even then completely empty stadiums are not needed in IPL.

I beg of you, please support any team other than SRH and MI

Nobody should root for two teams in the IPL. There are just 8 teams. Just pick one.

Nothing makes me more  than seeing those I support KKR and CSK and DC too but not against KKR type of posts.

I'm a believer in the Spartan school of (in)justice. Any disability or deformity has to be exterminated.  The alternate personalities would have to be executed. Or as they say in forum lingo, ids would have to be banned. :((

Not talking about you. Any similarity to actual ids, legit or banned is purely coincidental.

Who knows what is going to happen before the start of the tournament but it seems pointless even starting it. At some point someone connected with one of the teams will contract the virus and the whole thing will be stopped. As seems to now be happening in the English PL football

Forget split personality.

Everyone needs a spare sec:nervous:ond team to keep their sanity intact....

I support whichever team has young Indian players. I am not excited about rooting for a so called local team where the captain and main players are from abroad.

Any event that puts human lives at risk should be canceled. Glad our Govt recognises this and has initiated steps towards a gradual lockdown.

I was myself a sceptic of this approach but seeing how corona has spread exponentially in Europe, fully support a complete lockdown.

IPL needs to be stopped at this moment, period. No sense in playing in empty stadiums given it may still not insulate the players, media person, organizers. One infected person can easily be the source of mass spread without realising 2-3 weeks after it is contracted. If BCCI still tries to continue, then surely it has lost all sanity and sooner or later govt will be forced to give a kick at their backside to halt the same.

Sir, being a language teacher you must understand the need for punctuations. Please use them and make the job of going through your posts much easier.

You have no problem forming sentences using proper grammar, but you don't understand punctuation when it's something used across languages? How's that got to do with your English being weak? It's a common etiquette in discourse isn't it.

IPL behind closed doors, not ideal but the best option under the circumstances.

More TV viewership , most of the people will be stuck at home and even working from home, something to watch from home.

Fans with antibodies proof should be allowed. I am pretty sure there would be millions of fans who by now have immunity.

And only if they agree to dance to "Go Corona Go" instead of the IPL jingle.
