What started off as a normal work day for 31-year-old Bennix, the owner of a mobile phone shop in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district, turned out to be the starting point of a fatal ordeal. On Friday, June 19, around 8 pm, Bennix was in his shop near the Kamarajar statue in Sathankulam town when his friend rushed to him with the news that his father Jayaraj had been picked up by the police. Worried about his 58-year-old father, Bennix rushed to the Sathankulam police station only to be called in by the police officers there for an ‘inquiry’. Three days later, on June 23, Bennix’s friends and family were told by the police that the duo had died at the Kovilpatti Government Hospital, around 100 kilometres from their town.

Perhaps one of the worst incidents of police brutalities alleged in the country during the COVID-19 lockdown, the Sathankulam custodial deaths have sparked massive outrage in Tamil Nadu. People are demanding justice for the victims’ family and strict action against the policemen involved. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court took suo motu cognisance of the case on Wednesday and stepped in to monitor the proceedings.

Tortured to death for (allegedly) violating lockdown, this is murder of the worst kind. Details are chilling.

The sources I read spell that out as the reason, maybe must give some more time for other angles to come in. Some of  the policemen in all countries are barbaric, India isn't an exception.

Btw the duo are from nadar christian community so they are amoung the ones whom many call dumeels and what else ? Yeah Lemurians  etc. No wonder the police felt pretty confident in doing their depraved monstrosities on.

Sad incident but this is a pan-India (except Bengal where the lazy, coward police won't hurt a fly) problem, another one from TN

Worst stories come from Punjab, some very brutal videos out there just cos a few guys violated lockdown.

Whenever there is a huge coordinated outrage by our media we shld take a break before passing any conclusions

agreed my first reaction to this was same, but seems there is some revenge seeking that went on here, if the duo were history sheeters then it would come out fairly quickly.

some of these folks might be scum themselves, whom police nab in petty cases. Its just wrong no matter what they did to kill them in custody, the magistrates who remand them that go wrong, atleast move them to hospitals and charge the policemen, reprimand them so that there is some challenge.

It is wrong to compare deaths, evidence so far suggest custodial deaths and torture. It is inhuman the way police treat common people across India. But this outrage is selective based on religion and whose government is running the state.

No mainstream journalist who are crying hoarse now , said anything about sadhus lynched in MH. It was a case of custodial death when the sadhus was handed over to the mob to be killed brutally. Be that as it may, I hope the victims get justice and cops if guilty be arrested
