Is this the reason why Kohli selected Shastri over Tom Moody as Team India's coach?

Tom Moody, the former Australian captain, has put forth his opinions on India resorting to the theory of split-captaincy. At the present point in time, Virat Kohli has been leading the national team in all three formats. Captaincy hasn’t taken a toll on his batting as he is currently the only batter in the world with an average in excess of 50 in all three formats of international cricket.

However, with him approaching 32, a lot of people reckon that he should be giving up leadership in at least one format. Talking about the tactic, Moody stated that a country like England can afford the same since
Eoin Morgan, their ODI and T20I skipper, doesn’t play the longer version.

“On the [split] captaincy, it really depends. Like for England, Eoin Morgan is not a Test player, he has been, but he is not recognised as a Test player, he is a specialist white-ball cricketer. So, it works for them pretty easily, it’s a natural transition,” Moody was quoted as saying during a chat with Harsha Bhogle on Cricbuzz.

About India, Moody said that he would want the split-captaincy, bearing in mind Kohli’s longevity at the highest level. The veteran fears that if Virat continues leading India in all three formats, he might be losing out on two to three years of international cricket.

“With India’s example, which is probably the most high-profile example, the only reason I would prefer split captaincy there is purely to preserve the longevity of Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli is a superstar, we all know that. And he is an absolute delight to watch, to compete, as a captain and as a batsman,” he stated.

“It’s a completely different pressure. And I would be concerned that if Kohli maintains all the three captaincy roles, are we losing two-three years of international cricket from one of the game’s greatest-ever players?” questioned Moody.

Kohli is currently India’s most successful Test skipper, surpassing
MS Dhoni’s tally in the West Indies tour last year. He has also won a number of bilateral series, though he is yet to get hands on an ICC trophy. India are also on top of the table in the ICC World Test championship.

So basically, Kohli selected Shastri over Moody just to save his captaincy in both ODIs and T20s even though he doesn't deserve either!
