After 92 overs, we were to score 50 runs in 8 overs.
From the over 93 to 97, we scored 51 runs in 5 overs. This started with Sundar's six and four on 92.5 and 92.6.

nevada got a reaction from rollingstoned in Mark Reason: Australia's cricket loses honour in shameful short bowling assault on India
Excellent article! For all their bravado, the Aussie thug bowlers failed to close out the 4th innings in not one but 2 matches, back to back. If their God Bradman gets hit by England bowlers it is bodyline but it's targeted bowling when their thugs hurl the kitchen sink at their opponents? Since when is it okay to hurl bouncers at tailenders breaking their limbs? If not for his deliberately caused injury, Shami would have ripped the heart out of this phateechar Aussie batting line up. All brawn, no skill for these sandpapering thugs. Our bowlers play cricket, theirs play Bloodsport. They should be well and truly ashamed that despite all this, they ended up on the losing side.

Was about to post something similar. Dravid also batted slow, but if you watched the highlight reel, he looked so elegant. Plus he used to smash the short ball unlike Pujara who prefers to take evasive action.

It was a cat and mouse game for the most part, till the time Agarwal got out. IMO Australia made a mistake taking the new ball as soon as they became eligible to take it. They could have waited a little bit, giving1-2 overs more to Lyon, hoping that Pant would succumb to his own aggressive instincts. Pant's wicket was key,and the bowler with the best chance to make it happen was Lyon. The second new ball fetched them a wicket, but it also cost quite a few runs and changed a win for India from a theoritical possibility to a realistic one. With the target at about 55-60 runs, Pant and Sundar's IPL experience kicked in and they just went for the jugular. Attack was the best form of defense for them, because dead batting for 10-12 overs is just not their forte. Luck was on their side, and the rest is history.

After Sehwag's retirement, this is the first time I am excited about watching a batsman bat in a test. Gill is a treat to watch with his ability to pick off runs with ease. Pant gave a tad too many WTH are you doing moments yesterday but whenever he is at the crease, the excitement and anticipation is at a high level. His 89 yesterday was unbelievably clutch. I hope this is the first of many more such innings from him.

I have never found Kohli's batting pleasing to the eye as his stroke play is not of my taste..  He's a drive & flick player.  To his credit he has mastered it & it is his primary scoring shots.  I'll not put him in league of Lara Sachin Punter those were freaks & had many strokes.  Kane Williamson is more pleasing to the eye & his drives & square cuts are a thing of beauty.  Babar also has a aesthetic cover drive.

Gill is one such player who is all round & I love watching him go along.  Exceptional talent who has dazzling stroke play.  I am also looking forward to watching him in coming series.

Pant is an X factor player & a left hander so that makes up for great viewing as well.  I think he'll be a big hit on South African grounds with good bounce & fast out fields.

4 test series is ideal for a good test series between 2 big teams.

5 tests means tired players and lesser intensity. Bowlers may hold back from the start of the series and bowl within themselves.

    3 tests is too few.

I don't need to. I was always a fan of his style of captaincy from 2017 when he delivered us a win in dharmsala. Same attacking mindset with 5 bowlers, giving Kuldeep a debut who bowled well and packed slips cordon with a gully for bhuvi and umesh when the lead was minimal and came out guns blazing against Cummins to chase down a small target. When Kohli announced that he will miss the last 3 tests, I was happy before the series even started. Always a soft spoken man but inside has steel in his heart and a tactical mind and forgiveness for lapses in the field but still encouraging the team to do well. He even encouraged other leaders like Ashwin, bumrah and Pujara to have their say

Rohit and Gill are our most exciting test openers to watch since Sehwag/Gambhir. Long may they continue!

These players aren't only needed to win games for India, but to keep fanbase growing.

Kohli is the one who i am afraid of, he takes second to drop someone after few bad performances. There are few years left of him for being in charge of Indian cricket.

Just like Bumrah and Shami bowling in tandem, from 2018 onwards, have made many of us look forward to watching the Indian bowling.

One of the most enjoyable things in cricket is watching a high quality batsman dominate top class fast bowlers and spinners with dazzling stroke play.  It becomes even more enjoyable when the conditions are favouring bowlers more.

Right from Viv Richards to Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting, Viru Sehwag to the next generation of Virat Kohli and Steve Smith ... these high quality batters have entertained us over the years.

I am tired of watching T20 hacks, with little ability to tackle high quality bowling, hit bowlers on the flattest of flat pitches ... in conditions that are totally favourable to slogging.

The way Gill and Pant have dominated the high quality Australian bowlers with dazzling stroke play all around ... the pulls and cuts and drives against quick bouncy bowlers on helpful tracks ... was amazing to watch from the 2nd test to the 4th.

Ultimately, people will watch a game which is enjoyable to watch.

Indian batting had become boring to watch in the last few years. Yes, we dominated in known home conditions or batting tracks ... but come away tours against big teams, we were always hanging on for dear life. There was no dominance.

I am tired of the journeymen batsmen ... the "also rans".

Gill and Pant will make me watch Indian batting again. I can't wait to watch them take on Archer and Broad / Anderson on a sporting pitch in the next test series and hopefully destroy them.

Hoping to see a great 12 to 15 years of enjoyable batting from this destructive duo.

nevada got a reaction from BacktoCricaddict in WC 2011 finals moment - we all remember Dhoni's finish, but often forget Gambhir's foundation
Gambhir's knock is underrated for the superficial reason of it not being a century. He is the one who did all the hard work and dragged us out of the jaws of defeat. Gill was solid and kept hurting the Aussies with his free scoring ways. That 20 run over against Starc was super special! If he had got out cheaply or just tuk tuk'ed, the Aussies would have been all over us like a swarm of bees. I was so disappointed when he got out, he looked good for 30-40 more. With a little more experience, he will get to the stage where he can stay till the end to finish off chases. Pant was able to draw on his chasing experience gained in the IPL and finished off the chase.

    Phase 1:
Gill-Pujara - Gill playing normally, Pujara in blockathon mode
    Overs 36, Runs 71, RR 1.97
    Gill 57(114), Pujara 8(87)

    Phase 2:
Gill attacking, Pujara still in blockathon mode
    Over 41, Runs 95. RR 2.35
    Gill 72(125), Pujara 11(101)
First real acceleration. 5 overs 24 runs mainly due to Gill who scored 15 runs in next 11 balls and Pujara scored 3 in 14 balls.

    Phase 3:
Pujara also goes in acceleration mode along with Gill. Highlight - Pujara smashing Starc for boundary on off in 42 over - Chepu's first boundary. Starc 20 runs in 46th over.
    Overs 48, Runs 132 RR 2.75
    Gill 91(146), Pujara 26(123)
7 overs, 37 runs, Gill scored 19 in 21 balls, Pujara 14 in 22 balls.

    Gill got out here.

    Phase 4:
Rahane comes out with intent and scores 24 off 22. This was the time when it looked like India might be going for draw by not sending Pant in. But Rahane's approach was different.
    Overs 57, Runs 167 RR 2.92
9 overs, 35 runs, Pujara 37 (154) Pujara scored 11 in 34 balls - took some blows in this phase.

    Phase 5
Pant and Pujara - at this point people probably expected Pant to attack, didn't happen.
Overs 80, Runs 228 2.85 (Run rate actually dropped when Pant joined)
    Phase Overs 23. Runs 61, Pujara 19 runs in 55 balls, Pant 34 (84)

Pant batted at SR of 40 and Pujara 35 - who would have thought? They built partnership and new ball was taken. Pant played only 2 attacking shots IIRC. One he missed and keeper also. Second was 4 on mind on.
2nd session was also over and team was in final session.
Pujara got out in 81 over, just after new ball.

Overs left 20, Runs requred 100.

Some are commenting that Pujara got out at right time otherwise it would have not been possible. I disagree. Phase 2, 3 and 4 yielded 96 runs in 21 overs with 2 wickets in which Pujara was also batting. RRR was similar here.

    Phase 6
Mayank is dismissed scoring 9 off 15, Pant scored 23 runs in 24 balls here.
    Overs 87, Runs 265. RR 3.06
    Phase overs 7, runs 37

    Phase 7
Sundar and Pant partnership. It was going nicely, but RRR was ticking up.
At point it was 44 balls 49 required. At this point it looked like it might just go out of hand.

India needed a big over to stay in hunt.

Then Sundar smoked Cummins for six, then slashed over slips for 4. They scored 33 runs in next 12 balls and sealed the game.

That was an indirect threat to ICC before the vote that if you include more icc trophies instead of FTP Bilaterals we will go ahead and have a quadrungular of our own and create a parallel structure.. advertisers would line up to see india aus eng and south africa in a quadrungular trophy play each other twice than see bangladesh and afghanistan play in a meaningless world cup encounter..then the kiwi guy became chairmen and all stopped as he is reversing those decisions..

They were going for it till the end. But towards the end, after Mayanks dismissal and with 10 overs left it seemed that even Pant had shut shop. He was content with blocking.

Then THAT SIX happened. It was like a sucker punch out of nowhere, that to their best bowler. Suddenly woke everyone up. Followed by a four. Pant again got confident, went after Lyon and the rest is history
