Zaheer Abbas averaged 47 plus with 85 strike rate.He scored 7 100s in 62 matches compared to 11 100s in 180 plus matches for Viv in same Era. I don't think Viv would be as consistent as Kohli in this era. Nobody in history is as consistent as Kohli .

Abbas didn't play much, stats skewed by bullying India/Lanka. Didn't have the same impact. Still a legend, the 2nd best ODI bat of pre-90s era.

Batting in ODIs is super easy now, Gupill may seem like a better bat than Crowe...got to look beyond numbers. Anyway there is a separate thread for this Kohli-Viv comparison.

After 224 ODI matches. Virat Kohli is miles ahead of Sachin Tendulkar as far as batting numbers are concerned. In 216 innings, Kohli has accumulated 10,693 runs while Tendulkar’s tally stood at 8,350 from 217 innings. But more than the runs scored, it is the average and the numbers of centuries scored which tilts the balance in Kohli’s favour. Kohli averages almost 60 in ODIs, compared to Tendulkar scoring 23 hundreds after an equal number of matches.

Somehow  some people still think Sachin is even in the same ballpark as Kohli.

Applying the same criteria every modern era batsman will trump the previous generation batsmen. No taking into account the changing nature of the game? 10 years from now when 450 becomes par score other batsmen will statistically supersede Kohli too. ODI batsmen of this era have inflated stats, bowlers are better than what their stats suggest.

At this stage (54 matches) Rayudu is statistically a better ODI batsman than Lara, Ponting, Crowe, Dean Jones, Aravinda, Inzi, Thorpe etc...

54 matches is too small to make any kind of judgement, he has not played in all conditions against all teams. Your comparision is ridiculous , Doeschate averages 67 , it does not make him better than Kohli.

It is not just avg which makes Kohli greatest, it is the amazing consistent 100 making ability which makes him greates. ( he has more 100s than Smith, Williamson and Root combined).

Kohli is head and shoulders above everyone in odis.

how many have comparable stats to Kohli even in today's era.  The other 3 contemporary greats are not even close.

ABDV is at least as good as VK in ODIs. Smith in those 3 KO matches in 2015 WC achieved more than what Kohli did with all his useless 100s in JAMODIs. Kohli has also been absolute garbage in tournament finals, Sachin aced both WCs and tourney finals.

Who decides what is small sample size and what is not? Earlier you brought Zaheer Abbas to counter Viv :cantstop:, where was sample size then?

Pity he scores only meaningless runs and fails when something big is on the line. Can't be greatest with such a piss poor WC KO record and joke of a tournament finals record. I repeat again majority of his runs have come in inconsequential matches, Sachin top scored in 2 WCs and 2nd highest in another edition. 19 year old Sachin in 1992 WC did more than what VK did in 2015 WC.

No he not. In last 10 years or so he hasn't even conclusively outshone ABDV, and been owned by Dhawan on the big stage. And when it comes to important matches there are 10 other batsmen who I will take over this choker.

no doubt that Kohli is the best one day batsman of this era.But across eras , very difficult to tell. Lara avg:ed just over 40 .Amla averages almost 50.By  stats alone Amla is way ahead. But is Amla conclusively better??? Definitely not . A lot of  factors need to be taken into account and also need to be evaluated as to by  how much these factors  influence the numbers.Similar is with Sachin-Kohli ..

Kohli's one clear short coming as of now is his performance in world cups.

Well statistically Gilly is the best player in WC finals, three 50's & no failures & featured in 3 WC wins! If you're talking all WC KO matches then Viv, SRT, Gilly top the list. Virat has been avg in 2 WCs so just one great WC won't automagically make him as the best ever! He  has to do well in WC KO & more than 1 WC, in fact if you look at his WC record it's nothing less than shocking - given he's done reasonably well in CT & great in WT20 as well.

Even Dhawan will take guy who is owned by him everyday or week and twice on sunday over himself. Sachin is not even in the same ball park as Kohli.
