Graphic images of the attacked family, police sided with the other party when they went to file FIR over the derogatory remarks....BJP ruled state !!!!

Even Republic and Times Now refuse to cover persecution of Hindus when they happen in BJP states.

One signs of a self confident country, is that it's "intellectual" class is confident enough to comment on the rest of the world from its own perspective, and do so in even when it is not directly involved in any way

We are currently living in a time of major global shifts - a developing US-China Cold war, US race riots, Brexit etc. However, Indian columnists, writers etc will almost never take these up except as peripheral to some domestic issue

Where are the Indian writers pontificating on US race relations / police atrocities, HK constitutional position? They all talk about it in dinner parties but do not have confidence to join the debate. Moreover, they usually just parrot views of US or British intellectuals

This failure perpetuates a form of colonial Orientalism where we get dissected by the West but we can never dissect them. Instead, Indian publications bend backwards to publish obscure academics from the West to write on Indian issues, but never Indians to write on the West

Must add, that the one honourable exception to this is Wion TV channel. It reports on UK and US in the way BBC and CNN respectively report on India - i.e. with grave concern for the natives.

You're referring to publications and media within the English language space. The english language space is a predominantly western space.

In Hindi media, there's very little reported about the rest of the world. I think it has less to do with 'orientalism' and more to do with priorities - india doesn't have the resources to interfere in the politics of other countries, and the country historically, has taken a very 'non-aligned' view of the world. The average indian doesn't give a **** about what's happening in america.

China struggles to do the same thing ...but they're learning very quickly and you hear more chinese opinions on western countries than you did before.

Soft power is important.

Its much worse in India. Our Own Indian studies is controlled, dominated and narrated by foreigners. For one to get recognised Indian history degrees, they go foreign university not our own.

Its Indian institutions who need a global outreach. Be it newspaper, channels, universities....
