But I think Rishi Kapoor played a role wonderfully well in his first movie at the age he was then. What an amazing film. IMO it is probably the best direction by Raj Kapoor. One of the best movies in Bollywood. And Simi Garewal was cool. I thought Mera Naam Joker was very cringe. Even the music I don't like much. It could have been a good movie, but its run time is nearly 4 hours. At least it seems like that. The movie was a huge hit in the Soviet Union, it is alleged. Have met a Russian (actually Ukraine) immigrant acquaintance here. She came here in the 80s and grew up there probably in 60s. She told how USSR kept Hollywood out of peoples reach and promoted Indian esp RK movies as they were about socialism, anti-rich themes. She even hummed some songs from RK movies. I know for a fact that MNJ was promoted largely in Russia as it tanked in India badly, self-indulgent crap, great songs though. But RajKapoor was a nuisance in this movie with self indulgent narcissistic crap, with his ‘woe is me’ act. His b&w movies were great , esp boot polish, even Awara. I hate his direction more than acting, hypocritical. But music in all his movies were really good. My dad was (is?) obsessed with that movie. I remember when I was a kid he made me watch it as if it was some masterpiece. Crap movie. when I was about 8-9 yrs old, we were in Chembur eating lunch, at a south indian place, it happened to be Raj Kapoor's favorite apparently, and we saw him eating there too. My dad shamelessly used me to talk to him, telling him that "my son is a big fan", and I barely knew who he was. I remember my dad being so excited afterwards, and I was thinking what's so special about this fat old Santa Claus looking dude, without a beard. EnterTheVoid
B R Chopra's Mahabharat is an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE. Have a listen to the dialogue below. You could cut the tension with a knife.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OadmMzk2eKk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uuPgnGVS-w Even the title song has stood the test of time exceptionally well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRVHluptQio Edited July 17, 2020 by EnterTheVoid Mariyam and sandeep 1
Nikola
Idk if anyone here watch serial 'Kundali Bhagya'. It's such a rubbish serial. Negative, Repetitive & Pathetic. Idk how people even watch such stuff. Have to forcefully watch at times cause my mom likes it. Reading reviews of that serial i guess people are in similar situation as they are forced to watch this cause of their wife/mom or some family members. He may have been well into his twilight years by the time you met him. There is this general Kapoor propensity towards horizontal growth in the latter years from which even the great RK wasn't spared! In his earlier movies , mainly the black and white ones, RK does come across as a charming and vulnerable or as @velu would say "paavam" personality. It is difficult to not empathise. RK Studios has been in a state of neglect for a while now! There was a fire which destroyed the iconic main set and now there is talk of selling the plot off to real estate developers. sandeep

I don't think it was socialism just for the sake of being 'woke' or to please the Soviets. It was just that India back then was a predominantly agrarian nation, and those were times when movies were made on rural characters whom masses could identify with. Not just limited to RK, but even say a " Mother India". I think the Soviets found the message which was meant to be mainly about human suffering in line with their exploitation narrative. But a state pushing "culture" can only have so many finders. Eventually, the Soviet people, or a good chunk of them liked what they saw. I remember seeing a video on FB, where an all Russian dance crew danced to "Jimmy Jimmy aaja aaja" while singing it in Hindi. That is typical Bollywood kitsch which has nought to do with Socialism! nikred
[/url] WTF i didnt knew we made frends remake in India I not only knew about it, I also watched the first episode on TV. They thought having then popular good looking MTV VJs is enough to pull that off. I cringed through the whole episode. It made me realize that the cast of the original show were not just good looking people but could act as well.
