Instances where this team has surprised us (in a good way :P )

Still waiting for that elusive surprise.

Perfect opportunity after Adelaide surrender to give a back against the wall performance, with us missing Kohli, Shami, Ishant we have nothing to lose so must play in a free-spirted way.

2008 after SCG robbery the way we fought in Perth, or 2010 Durban after 1st test massacre. Will this bunch just give up or win against the odds for a change? After expected changes we'll have the likes of Pant, Gill, KLR, Jaddu (hopefully) who won't get stuck, will a change in approach help us?

And do check crucial knocks/partnership of those wins overseas.

There would be a good partnership for 6th and 7th wicket.

For ex - we were 125/5 and 160/6 in 2nd inn at Perth. Dhoni and Laxman added 75, Laxman and RP Singh added 51.

That team could have been bowled out for 200-210 and lost the match also.

Top order is putting similar effort. Bowlers are doing better. It's Rahane and co failing 100% times denying that opportunity when ball is old.

True our #5-7 haven't stepped up. From VVS/Dada/Dhoni to Rahane/Vihari/Saha. No wonder the link between top order and tail is broken. With someone like VVS in place of Rahane we would do far better, he would guide tailenders, shield them when required, score runs briskly as he so often did with lesser batsmen like Ishant, RP, Ojha.

Dada rarely played that role. He was effectively scoring runs in shadow of SRT and Dravid all the time.

Laxman and Dhoni were big difference. Laxman averaged 50 and Dhoni 40 during that 2003-2011 phase and that link is definitely broken.

We aren't struggling to replace our Dravid and SRT. We are missing our Laxman and Dhoni.

Best overseas victory under Kohli in my opinion.  This edges Joburg 2018.

In isolation, that was the better performance as it came against a full strength SAF with a beastly bowling attack of Rabada, Morkel, Philander and Ngidi on a dangerous wicket.

But sadly, that was a dead rubber.

Yep that was a significant win but being a dead rubber takes the sheen off.   Beating Poms at Lords anyways is far more satisfying & epic.
