No. There is no equivalent of radical Islamism. Muslims have flourished in Mumbai and their pop increased by 2% in the city if you compare 2011 and 2001 census figures. Forget Pak think of what happened in India's only Muslim majority state.

Religious, caste, ethnic, linguistic, party whatever excuse to extort money is a pan-India phenomenon. Real questiom is what happened in Mumbai in the 70s and 80s that made locals ok with having such a party grow? Why do so many normal Mumbaikars think of Bal Thackeray as a savior? Even next door housewives, normal uncles working in govt office seem to adore Balasaheb, why? Bal Thackeray was accorded a state funeral at Shivaji Park by the then Congress govt, surely there must be deeper reasoning behind that move. Indira Gandhi propped up the party to counter trade unions in the 60s->AITUC and CITU. Later the party trained its guns on different targets: Madrasis, Muslims, Biharis. But they had their reasons, of course when you have so much immigration, local people losing jobs/clout, govts shielding violent criminals from a particular community, bomb blasts etc there is bound to be a reaction/backlash and SS benefitted. We may disagree with their brand of politics but have to understand that it didn't grow in vacuum and India isn't the only democracy where this brand of politics has space.

Parties like RJD, SP, BSP are filed with dons/dadas/bahubalis, what do you think happens in those Hindi belt states? DMK first family practically owns Chennai, since you grew up in Bombay/Maharashtra you must know about the Pawar clan.

Shiv Sena is not a person but a political party, the good thing about them is that they're honest and relatively less corrupt, otherwise they have a tribal mindset of thrashing anyone speaking ill of Maharashtra state or Marathi culture.

I wanted to respond on similar lines. The liberal junta has a similar argument on Savarkar, saying that mentality/mansikta is the reason for creation of Pakistan. I think people on the left of center are afraid to speak the thruth on Pakistan. It was started from Sir Syed, Allama Iqbal who are darlings of the left ideology,  in late 19th century till now, you can't equate that with SS/Hindutva politics which came to limelight/power in thr 90s after the RJB agitation. Call them demagogues riding on public sentiment and after years of minority appeasement, but don't draw a false equivalence with creation of Pakistan. It is the new weapon of non-left to deride pro-nationalist movement in India, like Tharoor calling RSS Hindu agenda as Hindu Pakistan. No way, there is something like Direct Action Day in the history of Hindutva political sphere. Go fish!

Check the inscription on his sword. Read on his Malabar quests where he particularly targeted Christians and Hindus. Read about Kodava  Hindus who were butchered by his armies, also Mangaluru Christians. Also even today Mandya Melkote Iyengars don’t celebrate Deepavali, because he butchered 700 priests. He was an Islamic tyrant just like Hyder Ali , his dad. Just because he protected Srirangapatna and Sringeri doesn’t whitewash his tyranny.
