But Mavi isn't unfit. Neither Bumrah was unfit. Long lay off takes its toll and it did to both Bumrah and Mavi. Mavi had almost double the lay off than Bumrah. You are fit and want to bowl quick but those muscles don't respond same way because they haven't been used for two years. They will start working as you play more. It will take at least 6 months for Mavi before he starts to bowl similar pace he bowled in the past. Bowling in IPL will only help him. He is a hip dominant tendon driven bowler and will get better by bowling, running more.

Regarding Bumrah, he played first game did poorly, wasn't picked next games 2-3 games then played 5th game IIRC. Got picked coz other other bowler also did poorly.

It does take some time to get back to full pace after a break, especially an injury induced one. I had written about this even before the IPL started.

But it is not necessarily 6 months. It varies from person to person and also the nature of injury and the length of break etc. Bumrah started bowling at full pace within 4 months of suffering stress fracture of his back in late August of 2019.

But you are not getting my point. If success comes at a lesser pace, especially for a young pacer, then he may start thinking that pace isn't essential and may start bowling within himself. And he will not do well in the 2 longer versions. And won't realize his full potential. Which is why playing lots of practice matches is better than playing all the actual matches while bowling at a much reduced pace.

Take it up with the speedometer/hawkeye operators ,Stoinis has clocked 141 with his dibbly doobly stuff whereas mavi struggled ,so if you are a big strong aussie you will  get good ratings and if you are a malnourished midget indian you wont .

Yes ... Stoinis bowling some 138 k to 141 k balls, in the last match, was very strange. He looked very dibbly-dobbly.

Not only this ... when phoren bowlers are bowling 140 k to 145 k/ 147 k then the broadcasters are showing those speeds repeatedly as speeds for the over. When Indian quicks are doing the same then this is being done rarely.

Even the phoren commentators are promoting the speeds of phoren pacers much more. Not talking about Archer's spell yesterday, which was much quicker than any other spell by anyone else and deserves to be promoted. But 145 k balls by Cummins, Rabada or Nortje are getting a lot more mention than 145 k balls by Bumrah or Saini.

Tell me which is more commendable ... a pacer at his peak pace bowling 144 k/ 146 k or a young guy coming back after 2 years and bowling 142 k/ 144 k  ??  But it was Cummins' pace getting repeated mention and not Nagarkoti.

Looks like Phoren fast bowler and Indian trundler is the marketing theme by the broadcasters in IPL 2020. Although it is INDIAN Premier League !!  Makes my blood boil.

Its all about where you draw your inspiration from,Mavi if looks upto best from his country (Bumrah,Shami) he will need to work hard get back his pace, but if heeds to some Bhaiya advice then im afraid he will the same fringe player which that very Bhaiya has become,in short he will not be counted among top 3 pacer of the country

Hope Mavi still thinks likes this and gets back to bowling quick.

“I’m sure I will bowl faster,” Mavi declares, sitting in the Wanderers Academy office on a hot day in June.

Mavi’s litany of injury woes could have derailed him, but Dravid’s support, he says, has ensured the Indian cricket board’s full backing.

Mavi’s litany of injury woes could be the case of any aspiring fast bowler, but Dravid’s support, due to his talent, has ensured Board’s full backing.

Mavi says that the IPL too has been a major influence on his bowling; there was inspiration there—“Varun Aaron, Umesh Yadav, they injected new life into Indian fast bowling,” he says. “Aaron has returned from seven injury breaks without reducing his pace.”

Those bowlers have reduced their pace intentionally and lack of fitness. Mavi has no fitness issue. And if he drops intentionally then doesn't matter whether he plays IPL or not. Both Koti and Mavi are too short and slight statured to sustain high pace without serious injuries at such a young age. One is 5'8, another is 5'9.  So better to be measured. Their pace will be judged once their bodies mature around 24-25 years of age.

140 to 146 effort balls at their age is that par for the course ?

Btw, we keep cursing Indian trundlers, why dont we pick on foreign bowlers? Cottrell? Whats so special in him? Why pay so much to get this trundler? Why not instead take in an Indian talentless trundler? Atleast they will learn and earn something.

cottrell actually can bowl fast - he does trundle at times. Besides his character is saleable.
