IPL20 Captaincy Watch

Im not sure KKR playing with 7 potential bowlers is a good strategy or not. It severely deplete their batting as their Top 7 consists of both Narine and Cummins. It will severely affect them if they had to chase a 160+ score,  esp if one of their specialist batsmen was having a bad game.

But it can allow them to have multiple options when bowling. Yesterday when Kuldeep and Nagakoti didnt seem to have a great day, they could immediately go to other bowlers helped them a bit. Also the decision to bown Russel only at death with a premeditated line and length also seemed to work in both matches, esp Mumbai where they seemed to cruise for a 210+ score.

RR: Smith

  • Fitness: Nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: Close to the innovation and proactiveness expected from A+ captaincy: a) In the later part of K11 batting, Smith had the bowlers bowl to one side of the field to help restrict K11, b) The promotion and faith shown in Tewatia, who hit 5 6s in an over, and c) Won the toss and elected to field - so a change in pattern based on the feedback from players rather than continuing to bat first like in the last game that RR won at the same venue
  • DRS: Did not observe
  • Keeping/Fielding: Did his job
  • Batting: Pass .... Great batting to seize back the initiative that Agarwal's inning provided to K11
  • Toss: Won .... Elected to field first

Score: A+ .... The first A+ score of the tournament as Smith's captaincy was close enough to the A+ level

K11: KL

  • Fitness: Nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: By the book
  • DRS: Did not observe .... However, his team appealed on a couple of occasion but did not go for the review
  • Keeping/Fielding: Did his job
  • Batting: Pass .... But with concerns of not batting quick enough. Appeared to focus on singles at a venue where boundaries were the way to go. Maybe was focused on being consistent than playing impactful innings that can enable his team to bat the opposition out (or even worse remain not out)
  • Toss: N/A

Score: C .... For an avg day at the office while not trying to seize the initiative to bat the opposition out despite playing so many balls and being the man in form

Rahul shudnt curb his natural game , he batted like dream in 2018 IPL.....the way he is dropping guard in middle overs costed his team .

I dnt get this about Indian players becoming safe over the years specially kohli, dhoni, Rahul......with so much batting left what will u do .

Rohit may start slow but his S/r just keeps gettig better n better

For me Rahul innings was the diff, had he tried a lil harder while batting and their was nothing in the pitch + small boundaries KXIP wud have won. If mayank can bat like whats stopping him , he is far supremely gifted. I understand in a partnership one plays 2nd fiddle but dont go so slow in such venues

RCB: Kohli

  • Fitness: Nothing to complain
  • Captaincy: An improvement .... Maybe could have used pacers when Pollard walked in
  • DRS: Did not observe
  • Keeping/Fielding: Did his job
  • Batting: Pass .... for delivering under pressure in superover
  • Toss: N/A .... but would have batted first anyways

Score: B

MI: Rohit

  • Fitness: Captain Belly
  • Captaincy: Too many mistakes (did not have Kishan, who scored 99, in superover), no innovation or proactiveness
  • DRS: Did not observe
  • Keeping/Fielding: Dropped the catch of Finch who made a 50
  • Batting: Fail
  • Toss: Won .... Elected to field

Score: F .... There was basically no captaincy

Bravo didn't even get to bat with sky high required run rate. No questions asked?

Bravo wouldn't have done much. He's not a Russell, or a Pollard, or a Pooran. Hes quite slow in his approach and not a very powerful hitter.

But he's not as slow as Dhoni or Jaddu...I'm not saying sending Jaddu was wrong...that was the perfect option as he would slow things down..but these two should have started hitting earlier knowing that Curran and Bravo are on the way..Bravo has often been left with too little to face but he can accelerate quite quickly.

I didn't expect Jaddu to do anything. He was okay, could've started earlier as you said. But his hitting capabilities are that much only. He couldn't have done anything more. If he is to be made of any use, he must bat higher , since he takes up a lot of the balls. Maiden 50 for him, so it's a start after so many years.

KL is virat kohli 2.0 in captaincy. from the last match going over aggressive finishing pacer quota and bowling spinner in the final over to not trying maxwell in the bowling. team selection is also questionable as spin do of bishnoi and ashwin was doing well.

the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings – the tournament’s most successful teams have stuck to their inspirational captains Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, Kings XI Punjab have found a new leader in KL Rahul. The Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad will be lead by Steve Smith and David Warner respectively, thereby being the only teams to be lead by overseas internationals.for more information
