With that high backlift he will have to watch out against quality pace bowling on fast pitches.  Especially if he is opening.  A good pacer will always back himself to sneak in a ball or two before he gets that bat down in time.

Was never the long term answer.

Average talent.

Thankfully we used him at his absolute peak and won the test series in 2018.

Nah dude still averages over 50 if I am not wrong.  Rohit is a even worse choice.  Mayank will bash anyone in India..  He is having one poor overseas tour.  Needs backing.

Mayank deserves his chances whether he performs or not ..In addition to that he well in the last AUS series...

Yes he deserves more chances but...

I don't think Rahane has the guts to keep Rohit Sharma out especially after he travelled all the way from India for this test series.

Also Gill won't be dropped.

Vihari can be dropped... Mayank is a specialist opener. Rohit can’t open.

Rohit won’t be worse than Vihari in the middle order...

No he doesn't, we're there to win a series not to make something out of someone who's clearly demonstrated he's not up to snuff atm!

KL can open in place of Agarwal, both MA & PS has shown big gaps in technique & them being there just to count as a number isn't helping anyone! KL is also a much, much better fielder & catcher than MA.

He is good in SC conditions, He is OK in AUS & probably SA pitches if he sorts out his present short comings , but he is not your man to open under moving conditions. He would not be first choice opener for ENG  tour if i were to select openers.

No one is, not one player can claim to have mastered the English conditions at 1/2 over the last decade especially with DRS & against that Dukes ball. I believe the best of the lot was Graeme Smith & Latham, Cook from England but most of his big scores came against our sorry bunch! If you think MA or PS would do better than KL then you're sorely mistaken.

Am saying it again Openers playing T20 regularly will  find it very very difficult to even survive initial spell in conditions helping a bit leave alone succeeding.  The probability of the success is very very low . So if India go on playing regular T20 openers as Test openers , we will have chances of 8 out 10 failing outside SC .

Agree we do not have any one who we confidently say that he can overcome english conditions . But atleast the guy should give you some comfort that he can survive and may be have some decent scores in atleast 4 out 10 innings in ENG .  I am not convinced  the way he played in NZ be it tests or one dayers or now in AUS .

when he faced  someone who moved the ball a bit . Invariably will hold out in slip cordon very early .

May be time we get pujara to open for Eng series but in the meantime invest in pure long format openers  who have done well in domestics as a long term solution.

Or atleast start with one who can blunt the attack at on end.
