Can Sundar be tried in tests?

Even though he got Smith out, more than his bowling it was his batting that has impressed me. You can have all the shots in the world but if you can’t put that into the game and bat out tough sessions in test cricket, it is of no use.

Sundar’s calm batting style on display was brilliant last night. Showed class batting against both pace and spin of same bowlers who made it hard for the established batsmen like Rahane and Pujara to score runs yesterday.

The tour continues to show the great figjting ability of our players. They have all done well but this guy realy played an exceptional knock yesterday because we were looking at conceding 170 run lead at a point and Aussies would have been easily 300 runs ahead last night by the time session 3 would have ended.

That p’ship with Thakur will be remembered for a long long time by fans.

Remembering is not enough. These guys must be somehow rewarded for helping this team accomplish something rare. But how?

he looks confident and mentally tough. Needs to play more first class cricket for TN. Has potential but greater sample size and how he continues to grow will be telling

Does he really?  I mean he handled the best of the best bowling attack like a seasoned veteran.  What more does he need to prove by playing domestics?  He can play when he is available, but he should be a first choice in the squad.  Him and Thakur, both.

Test cricket is tough and the best players play so when Shami and Bumrah return, there  is no place for Thakur to play as a bowler.

In ODi’s he will get his chances since we do not want to play same bowlers and want to give chances to others and follow rotation to cut the load also on Bumrah and Shami who are our best test fast bowlers. That is where Thakur will be used a lot more.

Regarding, Sundar, he is very young and with Jadeja gone for now for at least two tests, and him being also a spinner, he can be likely played as spinner who can bat anywhere in the middle and lower order when needed. Easier for Sundar to be picked in a test side even when all others are fit than someone like say Shardul.

All true, but both have to be in the XVI and first choice off the bench.

Best bowling attack is Indias full strength bowling attack. Aussies are good in Australia.

But their attack would get carted in India. India's best attack is the best everywhere.

Does he warrant a place in the side as a batsmen alone? If so, in who’s place. He does not turn the ball much/bowling was not his first suit and so is going to really have to prove his bowling is on a level with Jadeja or Ashwin. First class is an excellent arena for him to develop his bowling skills .

Sundar has looked very solid again in a tough situation.

Looks like one of the better young batting talents we have now.

And what superb temperament  !

He's tall & has good judgement & it helps in getting to the pitch of the ball against spin.  That Inside out cover drive is classic.

Good defence & technique vs Pace.

If anyone among TM & selectors have vision. ..  He is a potential gun opener.

I agree.

He can be a great opener.

Gill and Sundar should be our openers once Jaddu is back.

But won't happen due to Rohit

Can Sundar turn into a player like smith for us? Granted smith is different beast altogether, but considering our middle order problem, we can play him as a pure batsman.

Possibilities are endless but if he does that consistently in this series..  It'd be awesome.  He is only 21 atm..

Jadeja is a must in test matches.

He is one of our MVPs

I agree. I just feel that Sundar will have to wait for his place till Jaddu retires.

We already have many specialist batsman for top 6, I don't think India will waste a position for that on Sundar.

There are likes of Shaw, Paddikal, Vihari, KL, Mayank and even Pandya in the race.

You look at scenario 3-4 years later from now. All these guys are waiting for their turns and it's not gonna be easy. I doubt we will invest on him as specialist bat.
