Ashwin or Pujara should have been captain

There is no question of hindsight here, everyone knew Kohli not playing last three Tests.

Why handicapped yourself with Rahane as captain when he could be droppable.

Another feather in the cap of the cesspit that run Indian cricket.

VIrat probably didn't want to create a threat to his captaincy.. imagine if Puji/Ashwin somehow leads india to a historic series win in australia against their full strength team.. kohli's biggest achievement till date will lose its shine and they will play for another 3-4 yrs so there will always be demands about making them full time captains. But with Rahane, even in the unlikely event of a series win under his lead, he can still be dropped whenever kohli wants to

When Rahane broke into the side he had some magnificent performances. His effort at Lords and Melbourne come to mind. In the 2015 WC he played a clutch innings against SA. One shot off Morkel is still etched in my memory. A few series later Dhoni was critical of him for lack of intent/strike rotation in ODI middle overs, think it was after the 3-2 loss against SA at home or some time after that. Rahane found himself left out of the Top 4 whereas the others(Kohli,Dhawan and Rohit) succeeded. Since then we have had a meek Rahane turning up match after match. Maybe he hasn't been able to get over his ODI failures and therefore has been insecure ever since. There was an article before the 2019 WC where he said he was expecting to be selected for the tournament. Don't know whether that was him exuding positive optimistic vibes or plain delusion.

He is in my hate-list since the day he justified his 35 balls 40 in Wt20 Sf of '16. His numbers are beyond horrible, someone who is test specialist, this is totally unexpected. What is befuddling is that he has never been called out, Pujara has been dropped 2-3 times for his snail-paced approach, while this guy walks into team without any substantial performances.

What a disappointing career he has had so far. Remember the late 2000s when he was racking up runs everywhere and scored 5000+ FC runs averaging nearly 70. Looked set to be the next 100+ tests,50+ averaging batsman for us.

He did turn around his form last year playing some crucial match winning knocks in WI (1st test) and vs SA in Ranchi test. But this year has gone back to being the same old mediocre form. These next 3 years should be make or break for him. Does well, he will go onto play 100 tests else should be the end of his career after this tour.

Hasn’t scored a 100 yet since Dec 2014 (MCG & SCG can offer the best chance)

In my previous analysis below, he lasts 67 balls on avg:

Balls played per inning:

  • Pujara: 106 (therefore is blunting the new ball vs. relatively fresh bowlers. will give a top order batsman bonus runs to add to his avg in SENA)
  • Kohli: 89
  • Rahane: 67

See this is my grouse with Rahane. He should have used the MCG momentum to have a super series, something he has failed to do over his entire career unlike Kohli/Pujara. Permanent member in the side since 2013, 70 tests, one format specialist, no secondary skill, captain this series, 2nd most number of test caps in this XI....there must be more responsibility.

Inexplicable crawl in 1st innings of SCG after a solid start by openers. On day 5 with us staring down the barrel, he lasted what 4 minutes in the morning?

Now again threw his wicket with the match critically poised, with not much batting left. Got away with those loose drives against the same bowler in the 1st 40 minutes. With around 15 minutes left before lunch leaves the team in trouble. Overall he has been a negative in this match, that sitter dropped when Labu was in his 30s, not picking Kuldeep, now this lack of discipline.

Only reason he has some leeway is because of 'SENA specialist' tag, we know the elaborate Kuchipudi performance he will entertain us with against Bess/Leach/Ali/Root next month in Chennai and A'bad.

Hope he saves the match in 4th innings. Some accountability please....

We all agree that he sucks in Indian conditions and is specifically chosen for exploits in RSA, Eng, Aus, NZ. He had a good set of performances in the 2013-15 cycle which earned him some leeway. His last 100 was in 2014 MCG, didn't do much in 2015 SCG test as well.

Anyway here are the scores:

2018 Jo'burg: 9, 48 (did well, 48 worth much more)
2018 Birmingham: 15, 2 (missed opportunity to win us the game)
2018 Lord's: 18, 13
2018 Nottingham: 81, 29
2018 Southampton: 11, 51 (another missed opportunity)
2018 Oval: 0, 37
2018 Adelaide: 13, 70
2018 Perth: 51, 30
2018 Melbourne: 34, 1
2019 Sydney: 18, DNB
2020 Wellington: 46, 29
2020 Christchurch: 7, 9 (missed opportunity, one of the most cowardly displays of batting against Wagner)
2020 Adelaide: 42, 0 (ran out well set Kohli and was dismissed soon after, missed opportunity)

13 tests, 25 innings, continuous run
Returns: 664 runs, avg 26.56, SR 42.13, 0 100, 4 50s, HS 81 (and people mock Pant despite his 2 100s in Eng/Aus )
1/3rd of his innings are single digit scores, not one score above 81, manages a 50 every 6th innings!!!!.
Gets easiest batting conditions at #5, when ball is older/softer and 30-40 overs before opponents take second new ball.

For someone who is a liability at home, who offers no secondary skill, whose slip catching has gone to dogs, timid personality with no mental strength. How is this guy a national captain? Even Bangladesh won't have such a guy in the team, forget as skipper.
That's shocking..how's he managed to stay in the team
