Not even close.  They are ranked #4 right now so not even a current time great much less ATG.

I swear the ICF brain trust gets dumber by the day.

Their bowling is quality to be fair. It's one of their best with Archer and broad.

Batting is no joke either. Good blend of players. Root and stokes who are with ATGs. Good support players and possibly their bestw wicket keeper batsman. Look objectively and you will be surprised. This England team is quality. It's just that other teams like India and Australia have more quality.

We desperately need a quality SLA and replacements for skiddy quicks Umesh/Shami. If we have those, we'll bury England.

Depends, As far as I'm concerned India's turnaround happens post 2001 Kolkata. You can ignore that or agree but since that time India's never been afraid of Oz, even with all the losses against their best ever sides - in that time India also has the best record vs Oz by far. If you'd ask me India is Oz bogey team, post 2011 Eng is ours especially in tests. It isn't a straight line as you think, our progression against different teams has had many peaks & troughs over the last 2 decades.

This supposed ATG team drew a series against PAK and came close to drawing the series against a terrible WI team; both home series.

With a weak second spinner option, it will be tough to contain him.

This is why we need our best pacers (in India) playing this game, of course they're not fit so maybe make the pitch just a tad more spin friendly - just a little bit like that Mumbai 2016 game, not like the Chennai one :cantstop:

But they've beaten SA away twice in that period in (2017 & 2020)..  Also Lanka in 2018.  If only they had a few decent spinners they'd pose a serious threat to us which isn't the case.  Batting is actually fine.

ENG are a good side, my disagreement is with ranking them as an ATG side especially in test cricket. That kind of honor is reserved only for the likes of the 1980’s West Indies and late 1990’s early 2000’s Australia teams.

An ATG team would certainly be the #1 ranked team in the world at the time and would be way ahead of #2. That alone disqualifies current ENG team from even sniffing ATG status.

Axar Patel Anyday. Sibley Crawley all struggling against Embuldenyas left arm spin.

If Indian spinners don't find a strategy for Root's sweeping and reverse-sweeping, it will turn into 2012 Kevin  Pieterson again. He looks in prime form and will be a bigger challenge than Smith 2017.

Given how Broad and Anderson are bowling, England's pacers may be the bigger challenge.

Anyone who has seen the Sri Lanka series and wickets taken by Embuldeniya, knows that we need to have a left arm spinner. Would have ideally liked Nadeem but will have to do with Axar now.

This series will be far tighter than we may have initially thought. Root, Broad, Anderson will be key. A few unknowns like Foakes, Leach, Archer as well.
