Wriddhiman Saha: "Wicketkeeping is a specialist position and should remain so. I will make the most of every opportunity I get when we face England in Chennai."

Won't mind Saha playing, Pant understudy this series.

How else will Pant learn/improve? Protecting him won't achieve anything, throw him in middle and he will learn while on duty. If he does a Parthiv Patel, we can think about it later. Just give him a full 4 test series at home.

Saha is too old, 36-37 is when reflexes start slowing down, doesn't matter how fit he is.

We need a like-for-like replacement for Saha (outstanding keeper, around 30 avg with bat), but someone at least 9-10 years younger so that he can also develop his batting along the way....is KS Bharat that guy? Pant is here to stay for the rest of the decade at least, so someone like Bharat can consider himself unlucky (unless Pant decides to give up keeping like Sanga, Baz), but still need a reserve guy.

Kishan, Samson, Rahul are not good enough for tests, no idea about upcoming young keepers (Jagadeesan, Bains....). So many options in white ball cricket, so few in test cricket.

I would be highly embarrassed if i played cricket for 15 years and the only thing i can do is stand behind the wickets and catch a ball .
Specialist wicketkeepers is a highly flawed concept.
According to me a wicketkeeper should atleast average 32+ in tests with 25+ avg in away conditions and this should be minimum. Also the keeper who has this stats should be great behind the wickets otherwise FO.

If Pant and Gill are not picked for the playing XI after their exploits and given a full series, I won't be watching it as a fvck you to kohli. if everyone does this, they will have fewer sponsor money and the "kohli brand name" will take a hit.

Edit: its hard to pick on Saha and he is getting quoted out of context here. I don't think he is being antagonistic towards Pant. When Pant went off the field after everyone came in and mobbed him, the first person he went to see was Saha and they hugged each other and this represents how happy they were for each other.

Bharat is Saha's successor. The Vidarbha keeper Wadkar has to be the next in line, is very good esp keeping to high quality spinners in his side.

Among the younger lot Anuj Rawat of Delhi is rated very highly by Dahiya and Ratra. Then there is Prabhsimran of Punjab

Keeping on sub continent wickets against spinners is pretty tricky and Pant has dropped a couple of catches off Ashwin in Australia as well, so it will be even tougher in India. But he should still play as a batsman though. I would go with Saha as keeper and Pant as batsman. This will be my team:

Rohit

Gill

Pujara

Kohli

Rahane

Pant

Saha

Washington

Ashwin

Siraj

Bumrah

Play Pant as a keeper-batsman else bench him (which Kohli will do anyways now). The guy has played as WK-bat all his life so far. Do not destroy his career by trying to pay him as a specialist batsman.

Pant will only improve by playing. U cant expect someone to improve just by sitting on bench. If pant starts playing n keeping in all formats with proper backing he will improve very quickly. Let him make mistakes n learn. If dropping catches is a concern well lets start with kohli himself and then also dhawan in LOI.
