Will SDP (Hardik) get to play tests soon?

I'm not convinced that Hardik has a compact defensive game. He's supreme at attacking, but can he dig in and play defence against quality, like Pant has shown that he can?

He grinded pretty well in ENG and made almost made a 100 against Sa

There's also the issue of that Dhoni-esque bottom-hand of his.

But this wud be mostly his problem , coz when it moves around all it takes one ball and someone with bottom hand grip will have more chances . Same was dhoni case but dhoni had a value and so does Pandya this . Both cant get in overseas purely as batsman but as value added players they can

Fair enough, but he has to bowl to warrant a place in those places - like Dhoni did with his other facets.

I see him as a direct successor to Dhoni's school of batting - perhaps with a slightly better range(?) - and much like Dhoni, while he can grind it out for a while, his game simply is more vulnerable against balls that don't spin.

I'm a big fan nonetheless, and would be happy if he shows that as a batsman alone, he is good enough to play Tests everywhere!

Ind should try to play 3 ARs in tests esp. overseas -> 1 batting AR, 1 WK AR & 1 bowling AR. Below could become a rough template in the mid term:

#1-3: X (Mayank, Rohit, ...), Gill & Pujara

#4-5: Kohli & Y (Sundar, KL, Vihari, Rahane, ...)

#6 Reserved for batting AR: SDP

#7 WK AR: Pant

#8 Reserved for bowling AR: Jadeja/Ashwin

#9 to 11 specialist bowlers per conditions: 3 pacers or 2 pacers + 1 spinner (Ashwin/Jadeja - if two spinners are needed)

Pandya cannot bat as high as 6 in SENA and his bowling has become so sporadic that he should be called a part-timer. our lack of a pace bowling A/R continues to haunt us overseas. dubey is crap, shankar is a batsman who bowls a bit, and pandya's bowling is not reliable anymore.

Why? Pandya is as good as Pant if not better (and people said similar things about Pant)  :dontknow:

People who said those things about Pant are eating their words; I'll be happy to eat mine if Pandu does that well. fact is that pant was lighting up FC, Ind A, etc. for quite a while and therefore his test success is natural. pandu, on the other hand, didn't really do much of note in FCs apart from the odd innings here and there. it takes not just talent but also experience to construct big knocks such as 100s. and pant had quite a few in domestics, which pandu manifestly does not.

discussion is moot though as long as pandu doesn't bowl. he seems to have given up on the idea of being an A/R, which is fine - but then he should only play in LOIs as a no. 6 batter.

SDP can avg 60+ in Ind type conditions, in SENA too, he has played a few good knocks and can add more dynamism to the line up (even in LOIs, he hit 2 big knocks in Aus recently) ... Let's not forget that he has been fast tracked to international cricket and is improving all the time

a few good knocks is not good enough for a no. 6 or even a no. 7. he cannot avg 35-40 in SENA. his away batting avg is 29 in tests and that too after including SL. at most, he could play occasionally in SC when we play 4 spinners and therefore need an A/R to open the bowling.

classic mistake of playing LOI players in tests - yuvi, raina, kaif, the list goes on.

On the type of surfaces he played on, for a new player, it is pretty good ... In Aus, he would avg much higher. Missed on playing on the flat track in the last test in Eng too :winky:

Lets hope he remains fit after the IPL. Not a bad option to have in the squad in England. We will need runs on the board, and SDP is that kind of a character who can come in at 5 or 6 down for nothing and still leave with a defendable score

Let us not forget that the likes of Thakur, Patel and Washy got their opportunity because of missing first team members

Pandya may not be a necessity in India, but I have a feeling that in England, you may require a player like him

I wouldn't break the duo of Ashwin-Jadeja, not unless there's an outright green pitch.

Both are capable batsmen and compliment each other very well (L&R, counter attacking & defensive). Not to mention both are world class spinners of completely different varieties.

Pandya isn't world class in any aspect of test cricket (bat or ball).

Also 3 good pacers are sufficient for most wickets, even in SENA.

A 7-11 of,

7. Jadeja

8. Ashwin

9. Ishant

10. Shami

11. Bumrah

would be best in the world in terms of overall bowling strength and also provide depth to batting. We don't need a 6th bowler for this attack.

What ??? Hardik is a very good player of short ball .  Raina even at his peak was not hardik level destructive

I like pandya. Tell me when he actually smashed express pace bowling of 140 plus in international cricket. Good bowlers ideally.

Look at his avg against aus - aus have 140+ bowlers. Its not easy to come n start smashing 150k bowling. The likes of rohit kohli are set when they smash them in end

He scored vs guys like Daniel Sam.

Aus don't have all 140 plus bowlers. There are like maybe 3 max. Not many can consistently bowl 140 plus in tests.

As for pandya in T20 and odi I only saw him smoke Sam and co.

Don't get me wrong I like the guy but I am yet to see him take out 140 plus good bowlers.
