Apples and oranges.

talent and potential (just that ppl have reservations w/ players who are unorthodox) ... Many wanted Saha over Pant (see post NZ tour) ... if  SDP had been backed, he too would have been developed by now (already the best player v Aus in recent LOIs - MOS in T20s. So after focusing on batting, he is attempting to take it to the next level)

Aur Madras double century and plenty of 90s

Dukh ki baat hai, I thought no one would replace Dhoni as number 1 in India's history lekin immediately aa gaya Rishabh. I was his fan from the start and wanted Saha out.

Still, Dhoni is ahead if he look at all facets in tests like tactics, leading and excellent behind the stumps. In an ATG Test XI Mahi will be the skipper/keeper/number 7.

SRT after 20 matches - 1085 runs at avg of 37, 4 100s.

Dravid - 1526 runs at avg of 52 with 1 100.

Sehwag - 1513 runs at avg of 45, 5 100s.

Gavaskar - 1733 runs avg of 51. 6 100s.

Kohli - 1235 runs at avg of 41, 4 100s.

Pant - 1358 runs at avg of 45, 3 centuries.

During this phase, he has already played

1. Big 100 knock at Sydney,

2. knock to draw the game in 4th inning overseas,

3. Match winning knock to win game overseas chasing big total.

4. Century on turner in India when team was in trouble.

5. Century in 4th inning in England.

6. Good knocks on flat decks.

Scoring on flat decks - check

Scoring on turners - check

Scoring against top bowling - check

Attacking any bowling - check

Performing under pressure - check

Performing in easy situation - check

Consistency - Check

None of Indian batsmen could cover so many aspects so early in the career.

Scoring on fast bouncy tracks against tall fast bowlers - check

Scoring consistently in the 4th innings - check

Coming back strongly after every other ex-cricketer and his dog criticizes him in public - check

Dhoni abroad was no more than a handy batsman. Pant beats him handily in that criteria alone. On current form, he is better than most of our specialist batsmen. How many of them have played a series deciding 4th innings knock in SENA and made a habit of making big scores with backs to the wall?

If you count Pant's knock as a century, when was the last time a top order batsmen from India scored 100 in the 4th innings in SENA on the 5th day, regardless of the result????

He is better than kohli ever was in second innings chases let alone dhoni. When has lolli ever scored a match winning innings vs sena in second innings?

Kohli is a legendary player but in sena he never had performed like pant.

Kohli is a one trick pony. He is a very good front runner but backs to the wall, not so much. His captaincy is no better - comfortable only when the team is nicely ahead, on pins and needles when behind.

While it was obvious that Dhoni still captained the ODI when he stepped down, its now obvious just how much he masked and covered up Kohli's inadequacy as a leader.

When Kohli was at his peak, his centuries and performances hid his ability to captain. Once his batting declined, he is been shown to be a huge pretender.

All jokes aside, like in the US presidency, Indian cricket should not be captained by a player for more than 4 years ever. I dont think its good for grooming the next captain.

At the moment, there is no player that is worthy of being a captain and also a place in the side. Sure Ashwin in Asian conditions, less so in SENA.
