'Disappointed with tailenders, they couldn't stay for even a brief while' - Washington Sundar's father

Axar run-out happened in last ball, then final two batsmen got cleaned up next over. Sundar never got the chance, and it wasn't like he slowed down towards the end.

Yes you are right ..the culprit in all this was Patel , he was the one who was completely stupid but Ishant and a lesser degree Siraj are getting all the blame and Patel is getting a bit of a free  pass .

Would you have been just as disappointed if it had happened 4 runs later?

Depends. If Ishant hit the 4 and got out, maybe not.  Kidding aside, if they had stuck around long enough to get Sundar through, of course Sundar’s father would have been satisfied. They would have hung around long enough to see their team mate through. By the way, it’s nice to see him says what he feels. He said nothing wrong. No need him for him to go to politician school.

It is not about his Sundar Sr. or about how he expressed his feelings.  It is about the undue importance that we (me included) attach to an arbitrary, symbolic metric such as a century.  The same public will then turn around and blame WS and call him selfish the next time he gets to his 90s, and gets bogged down because *everyone* and their uncle just wants him to get to that arbitrary milestone.

Ishant could have contributed in this match by hanging around, He is not that bad as the dismissal showed yesterday. Yesterday, he was batting as if it was intentional, Even Siraj was acting all confident and then got out. Anyway, Sundar will score century eventually but this time Sundar's father's stance is justified, just because we were leading that doesnt mean tail enders should take it totally lightly, had it been other way around, we lagging behind or India requiring 10 more runs to win, their efforts would have been heavily criticized. This is why our tail sucks.

No gunaah.  Why mujrim search?

Would we be looking for mujrims if Washington had made exactly 100*, Axar got run out, and Ishant and Siraj had got out like they did, and India's total was 369?  I don't think so, although the team's position would've been exactly that same as how it turned out.

Okay, I need to stop now :-).

He had about 20 opportunities from 92  to outclass Pant and hit two reverse hooks where there were absolutely no fielders lol :--D

May be he was not thinking about 100? Infact everyone assumed  he will eventually get it. He did try a reverse sweep at the Gabba and got out at a crunch time. May be he didn't think that was a great idea? All he needed was one ball to face which would have been a formality had Axar did not run headlessly.

The damage was only for Sundar. Imagine India needs to hang around for 2 overs to save a test? Not the first time they have botched it. In the first test as well.

A century has always been a cherished milestone. That will never change.  Also, Sundar was not bogged down and team goals were not being sacrificed. That was not even an issue when Sundar Sr. was talking to the reporter. The fact is those 2 tailenders were in the way of Washington’s first hundred and his dad had every right to express his disappointment. By the way we applauded when Siraj stuck around for Ashwin’s hundred. We weren’t making comments about the century being symbolic then.

I am clamouring for it to change.  In and of itself, it means nothing from a win/loss standpoint.  And because it is cherished, it has caused many a player to get bogged down (esp in ODIs) and adversely affect the team's position, and chase after an arbitrary number (100) of an arbitrary milestone (100)

Exactly the point, and we should be celebrating that fact, rather than lamenting that he didn't get to the arbitrary landmark.

If they were in the way of getting the team into a comfortable position, I would've been disappointed.

Exactly what should change. We should've applauded that he stuck around enough for the team to pile on important runs, not that he stuck around for Ashwin's century.

No. Moments of celebration should not change. Nobody is “not celebrating” Sundar’s accomplishments. We are just saying that it would have been nicer if he could have topped it off with a hundred. On a light note, if you have a significant other (e.g. wife, girl friend etc.) please don’t miss out on “arbitrary” days like her birthday. Telling her that you think she is special every day might not be enough. You might have to stage a Rishabh Pant style recovery...

Total thrash. His dad is fit to be a participant in Big Boss.

Imagine Ashwin's father saying Sundar should have picked atleast a wicket in 26 overs he bowled in first test. Then compared him with part time bowler due to lack of wickets.

This finger pointing habit is ridiculous when his own son will also fail in some or other aspect every now and then. This will do Sundar no good. His dad's negative comments about Sundar's team mates will not help him in any ways. He should just avoid giving such comments publicly using media.

I can understand,i felt like slapping Ishant for his such irresponsible shot

Siraj too played rash could have stayed but he is a newcomer ,Ishant is the real culprit

Had it been kohli who missed out on century that would have been last match for Ishant and Siraj for long time.

Exactly what Sundar's father is saying, He is criticising the approach and reluctance of tailenders to resist.

A look at both the wickets, one would feel for Washy isnt it. But these sort of stuff happens in International cricket and should be just left at that.

I just hope Washys father stays away from the media as he does not seems to be equipped to speak to them.

But his 96 will be remembered for a long time just as much as Pants century

But all this will be forgotten if India does not measure up in the Finale.. still some work to be done

Problem is only about parents making unnecessary comments in public. Make those comments inside your home ...not with a mike on your face.

Do we need parents talking against each others adult children .

Usne mere bete ka catch gira diya. Isne mere bete ko run out kara diya .

Mera bete ka century nahi banne diya ...

Beta is playing for the national team....not the gali ka team .
