How can we fix our ODI bowling?

Recommended Posts

The ' template ' batting approach is a problem but the real problem is our ODI bowling since WC2019.

We couldn't defend 350 in NZ, leaked 375 against AUS twice and again not able to defend 335 against ENG. This means we have been found out by these 3  top teams.

Lost 0-3 NZ

Lost 1-2 AUS

1-1 Eng so far

Spinners:

Kulcha is finished.

Krunal is useless.

Jadeja ineffective ( as bowler )

Ashwin too old. ( And discarded after CT 2017 )

Washington is  one dimensional.

How can we fix the spin department ? Should we just pick one spinner and base our attack on pace bowling.

Pace Bowling :

Bumrah and Bhuvi are locked in. But can they strike in powerplay ?? Past record is not that encouraging.

Mo. Shami is a strike bowler but mostly plays on helpful conditions overseas as third seamer.

Thakur and Hardik are sort of 6th bowlers.

The only positive is that WC 2023 is far away so we are hopeful to find some solutions as we go along.

For starters , Stop picking wrong players in wrong format

  • Krunal bowling is better then jaddu in t20 but not in other formats. Axar was the right replacement. I wudnt even trust sundar with 10 overs as of now
  • Siraj is a red ball bowler
  • Saini shudnt have been dropped at all

Don't think Krunal is even a guaranteed 4 overs bowler in T20s. He is a okayish 6th option, on good days can bowl 4 overs. His bowling is a disgrace.

Moeen bowled exceptionally well and Adil bowled a bit better than Kuldeep. Krunal was crap. One look at the pitch maps of all bowlers shows that Moeen was the best spinner today. Extremely accurate. Need to stop playing spinners because 1. Our LOI spinners are not that good and 2. D/N matches in India are extremely unfavourable to bowlers at night but playing more pacers will mitigate that to some extent.  Just hedge our bets by backing pace and hope for the best.

In 4 he is fine , he n hardik generally shares. His strength is his variety and anyways batsman is looking to hit bowlers every ball which is where variety is needed. Here batsman can milk him and put him under pressure then he has no skill to fall back to. Odi n test needs consistency in length which he lacks. In t20 he can bowl bouncer, leg spin , dart, dart wide, yorker ...every ball different ball works there. This buffet wnt work here.

Fair point. No point playing two spinners just for the sake of it.

If we don't have any,  just play Jadeja as lone spinner and pack with pace options ( which are in healthier state compared to spinners)

I have for the last month or so have said our Powerplay bowling sucks.  Even with Bumrah & Bhuvi we know we ain't getting many wickets but we can control runs.  Prasidh looks like the enforcer type as of now & will develop further in LOIs.

Our spin bowling stocks are dry & on flat Indian pitches with quick outfields its a tough job.  As of now an extra pacer is the only solution.

Next game

Siraj in for Kuldeep  (try him with the new ball)

Bhuvi

Prasidh

Thakur (Batting depth + lord of taking wickets)

Sundar for Axar better bowler than him plus Shardul is there to do late hitting.

We have a good bowling attack, if it was WC we wouldn't be playing these guys or if all were fit. People talk about Thakur and he is a fighter I like him a lot but look at his ER in T20 and ODI also his bowling average - he is not one of the best 3 seamers for us in limited overs. I would only play Thakur in tests from now on and only in certain matches, he can bat too which is useful. Kula and Chahal are finished.  Prasid is a one trick pony, new guy but already he is showing mainly he can only bowl back of length and not express as bumble said (136-138kmph mainly) - perfect for pulling, his yorkers, slower variations, thinking brain - it's all missing. He has a lot to learn if he is to make it.

Bumrah, Shami, BK, Jaddu, Akjhar/Sundar. Can only consider Ishant Sharma/Ashwin/Siraj. Need intelligent spinners who can dart fast but also spin it a bit more if needed.

Hardik will always play as he can bowl few overs if someone is having a bad day, good fielder and batsman. Krunal can slog but no space for him as his bowling is harmless and he can't dart well either.

Order in reverse

Bhuvi, bumrah, shami /prasidh/nattu, thakur/ashwin , jadeja/Washington , pandya, sky, pant,rahul/iyer, kohli,rohit, ishan/gill.

Can't have 4 rotating strike batsmen.

Go strong in bowling so that  wickets will fall when we have good Containing bowlers. They can't attack everyone.

If pandya doesn't bowl , don't play him as a batsman.  Else if you want to play pandya as a pure batsman get him to open.

In the first 10 overs, irrespective of who is bowling for us, we seem to bowl  too many back of a length balls or full balls.

From this it seems that it is our team strategy is to be either too defensive upfront or going for that elusive swing.

We need our fast bowlers to bowl like test matches in the first 10 overs. Target the top of off stump ball after ball and hit the deck hard.

This will produce upfront wickets.

We should play Shami since our bowling is struggling to take wkts. Would have Shami-Bhuvi up front and tell Bhuubi to pitch it up and let the ball swing. Bumrah as 3rd pacer. Jaddu should be there for fielding+reasonably steady bowling+some batting. that's 4 bowlers. for an attacking spinner, we need rahul chahar (pity that gopal anna has regressed). bishnoi is another prospect - he can be successful a la rashid khan. that's 5 bowlers. 6th bowler should be hardik.

Prasidh looks like a very good prospect for ODIs. Good addition.

Wicket taking ability ... cracking quick indipping yorkers ... zippy off stump good length balls that go away a bit ... mixing it with sharp bouncers ... he has it all.

He was our most economical bowler in the 2nd ODI too.

If he can bowl more good length balls in his first spell  ... he can be near perfect for a rookie.
