Which ICC Trophy disappointment hurt most since 2013?

Recommended Posts

The issue with that thinking is that it tends to excuse the bowlers who should've done better in helpful conditions - take the Eng game out which was doctored to be a batting paradise, BK & even Bumrah shat the bed in first 10 overs against almost every opposition. Wickets up front always help & our last WC win was also down in part to Zaheer bowling that brilliant economical spell up front. Whether you get 1 or 2 or 5 wickets upfront isn't a point of debate, you should ideally get as many as you can especially when conditions are helpful. Did BK look more threatening in SF against NZ to you? I don't remember that because it never happened, Shami could've made a big difference there but more importantly that MFer Chahal did so bad that he should've never played for India again - & yet here we are debating his place in the side 3 years later

DHONI Era

WT20 2014 Final: India had a golden chance to lift the trophy. Everything was going fine until Yuvraj came and messed it up big time. Even 160 would have been enough. But Yuvraj choked. Indian bowlers worked hard and made even 130 difficult at one point. Dhoni would have the only captain to hold ODI WC, T20WC and CT at the same time. This still baffles me how it went away from us.

ODI WC 2015 Semifinal: India were beaten comprehensively by both Australia and England in a triseries just before WC. So India were not favorite to do anything in the WC. But surprisingly all got together very well for India as India topped the group by winning all the matches. It gave a false hope and Aus on the semifinal day just blew us off. Not so disappointing at the end as that 2015 team has lots of cracks.

WT20 2016 Semifinal: Dhoni final ICC Trophy as captain. India were favorite but huffed and puffed to semifinal due to a red hot Virat Kohli. WI  possessed a unique challenge but most of us were confident we will get past Windies and secretly waiting for the real match - India vs England in the final. India got 190 odd despite Rahane slow start and when Bumrah castled Gayle early and the first 4 overs went tight, it felt that it would be easy. And then the Ashiwn NO ball wicket of simmons, dew factor came big and India had no answers to windies powerhitting. Massive massive heartbreak.

KOHLI Era

CT 2017 Final: How can we mess this up? Up against a weakest ODI team Pakistan, we just messed u it up spectacularly right from toss, Bumrah no ball wicket of Fakhar, choking against Amir and everything just went against us on that day. Hurt the most.

ODI WC 2019 Semifinal: Like 2015 WC, India steamrolled opposition in the league stage to top it and look set for the Final until the dreaded semifinal against NZ. It was literally shocking to see Shami out of the team despite being our best bowler right throughout the championship. 240 was still gettable but all hopes were vanished when we had that epic collapse of 5/3. We deserved to be in the final.

WTC 2021 Final:  India topped the league despite a blip in mid of the campaign. Flying high on bating Aus (away) 2-1 and England 3-1(Home), this was India's best chance of ICC glory. NZ was a tricky opponent though having beaten India 2-0 in league phase.  It was all too familiar for India...shaky top and middle order, under cooked preparation and wrong team selection. Even two washed out days couldn't save the day for India.

WT20 2021 Super 12:  A mentally fatigued t20 misfit team led by a terrible captain was humiliated by PAK & NZ and for the first time since 2012, India failed to reach KO. One of the worst campaign.

Rohit Era

WT20 2022 Semifinal:  A better performance than last T20 WC on paper but it was no better. There were glaring holes in both aspects with conservative approach in batting and toothless bowling. Exposed to maximum in the semifinal with a phanity of epic proportion. Only saving grace was a close victory against Pakistan.

Looking back 2014 and 16 hurt more now as we could have won more in those times when we were still on par with the standards of T20 game.

Now I don't even see us winning in this era where T20 game is completely changed.

we will struggle to make SFs here onward

Here we go again...another ICC Trophy Final!

Can we break the jinx this time?

Since 2013, there have been 9 ICC trophies ( including WTC 23 Final) and we have been in Knockouts 8 times - 4 Finals and 4 Semifinals.

Quite impressive. No? Because we have yet to win the freaking thing.

WTC 23 Final provide another opportunity to break the hoodoo.
Rohit & co. - Lets bring it home!!!!

2014 one hurt like hell...we were almost there and had Yuvraj not struggled against Malinga..we would have won there eventually.

2016 one we deserve to lose because we played Rahane on Wankhede and he prove us all correct by scoring 40(35)...and he has fooled everyone again this time with his IPL exploits.

I don't think Rahane ever fooled us lol He was always a low strike rate batsman. It was the mistake of selectors to back him. 40(35) was par for course by Rahane.   This is the first IPL season where his strike rate is over 140. He has been playing since 2008.

To be fair Kohli also struggled against malinga. He took 59 balls to score some 79. He never really got going either.

No use in blaming Yuvraj alone.

Yeah, true it was a collective failure.

Yuvraj was blamed because he lost plot at crucial time, else even Legend Rahane and Thala played their part in ensuring we score a sub par total.

And we played Thala and Rahane again in 2016 T20 WC :phehe:

2014 was loss on Kohli,Rohit as well. Rohit-Rahane went back cheaply, Kohli scored something like 78 of 58 (Nothing praiseworthy). Even in 2014 SF,It was Raina who pressed the accelerator by scoring 20 off 10, otherwise we would have been deep hole that day, too.

More likelihood of aliens visiting earth this month than us defeating that Australian team , that too in an ICC final where they are the mental beasts ... and that too in England where our batters lose brain cells by each passing over.

Unless we drop in a Nagpur bunsen burner at the Oval, we got virtually zero chance. Please don't set yourself up for another "heart ache".

CT '17 F and WTC F losses were the worst by far. Rest of the losses came against better (or more deserving) teams in those situations.

CT '17 F - It was a day match on a bright and sunny morning with no clouds and a belter of a pitch. We had already smashed Pakistan earlier in the tournament batting first. Pakistan too were atrocious at chasing at that time. On top of that there's always pressure chasing in big matches. But idiotic Kohli after winning the toss decided to chase. Probably he thought it would be same as chasing in a D/N JamODI at home with dew around the corner.

WTC F '21 - Even though NZ was more than a challenging opponent in English conditions and had already played a 'warmup' series against Eng just prior to the F, India was overall the better team which had stayed on top of the rankings for 5 years. After losing a crucial toss we still created opportunities and stayed in the match going into the last day. All that we needed on the last day was our Trimurti  to bat out the morning session among themselves and the lower order would have batted out the 2nd session. The test would have been drawn and we would have been the joint winners.

Yes, I was counting down each over in Pant- Jadeja partnership. They just needed to play 10-12 overs and the target would have been 175 in 40 overs instead of 138 in 54 overs.

Nz would have shaken hand in that scenario.

We were better than Lanka as well in 2014 WT20, whole tournament we played like beasts and then choked hard in the final stage.

2015 Aus, 2022 Eng were far far superior agree.

2016 WI was better, not by a big margin, but definitely better in those conditions with Sammy slotted in to bat at #10 IIRC. In fact we were lucky to even make it to SF in that edition, doesn't hurt much.

NZ in 2022 WTC F too better, especially after that warm up series against Eng where they whitewashed the hosts  I think.

Don't even want to talk about the 2021 T20 WC, abomination of a team.

Boys will surprise us when we least expect them to. Why so pessimistic? If there is one team Aussies fear, it is India. Has been true for the last 5 years, 4 consecutive BG series in our favor.

Bhai I had this same feeling before the T20 semi against England last year but we all know how that ended. :((

I am not asking to abandon the team or skip the game but to keep the expectations and hopes as low as possible. The odds are heavily.... I mean really heavily stacked against us. If we win here ,  I would say that it'd be a bigger miracle than the Gabba win. We atleast had the momentum on our side back then with two positive results at Mel and Syd.
