We are always expected to win at home matter who the opposition is.

Exactly. Its the odds. In Australia we beat the odds hands down from an inferior position. Also never in the game we were in a better position than them. Lost toss. Bat second. 186/6. Then rear guard action. Still Deficit. Then Aus off to a blistering start. 89 odd without loss. Virtually 122/0 in 3rd innings.. and India to bat last..its improbable even now to think that Aus lost from that position with a full strength team both in batting and bowling department.

in Eden Gardens we were at full strength and at home. We had beaten virtually the same team with Taylor in 1998 2-1. We were at home with home umpires and there were at least 2 dubious decisions. We just had to bat and bat and by the end of day 4 we were safe. Whereas in Brisbane we were never safe till we won and we had to bowl out a full strength Aus team twice with a C bowling attack ( Half fit Saini, two test Siraj, one test Thakur and debutant Sundar, Natrajan) and chase with a B batting attack ( sans Kohli Jadeja Ashwin Vihari who were the heroes at Sydney). Eden Gardens India team had a good bowling attack sans Kumble and most importantly it was a 5th day Indian pitch with ball spinning and Opposition BATTING to survive. India on other hand in BRISBANE BATTED TO WIN not to Survive on day 5 pitch against Starc Cummins Hazlewood Lyon.

1998 aus & 2001 aus was not almost same. McGrath, gillespie, gilly, Hayden & langer didn’t played in 1998 tour.1998 aus was avg team with avg batting and avg bowling.

2- zaheer, bhajji, sairaj bahutule & Nilesh Kulkarni was our bowler in Chennai test.

bahutule & Kulkarni played totally 2& 3 test in entire career. Before that series zaheer played total 2 test & Harbhajan played 8 test.,so that attack was similar to gabba test attack.

Difference is Bahutule Kulkarni bhajji had been stellar performers in Ranji trophy and they were spinners playing in home ground on day 5 pitch. Natrajan Sundar had non existent first class experience in 4 day games. Basically they were Loi t20 specialists. So it ll be incorrect to say attacks were similar. Also 2001 was at home and other than Siraj none of the bowlers had even been to Aus before forget playing.

I am talking about Chennai test 2001, so it was not day 5 wicket.aus  batted first in that test.for me 2001 & 2021  is equal .2001 series win came against goat aus team in home & 2021 series win came in aus ( gabba aus fortress).

Disagree.

Australia was a true powerhouse of the competition and absolute juggernaut of cricket at the time. Australia's current cricket team is a joke compared to the side in 2001.

Beating them, when 1-0 down in the series and asked to follow on and only 6 wickets in hand with SRT out cheaply, trailing by over 100 in the 2nd innings.

Thats not even counting India taking 10 wickets inside 2 sessions to draw the series.

It is true that 2000-2001 Aussie team was far superior in batting and the same or slightly better in bowling, but winning away from home with a 2nd string of players does it for me.

Nostalgia is quite a thing isn't it?

Yes, Australia were invincible back then. Yes , they were on a winning streak worldwide. Yes , we lost the first Test and were following on in the second but it can't possibly be greater than winning a tough away series with reserve players after getting humiliated in the first game....

The Indian side of 2001 would comfortably beat the Indian side of 2020.

Similarly Australian side of 2001 would smash the Australian side of 2020.

Dont got me wrong its a great achievement in Indian cricket in 2020, but you cannot compare the quality of the sides.

Its like saying India beating WI 3-0 in a test series is the better/greater than India winning a test in the WI during the 70s and 80s. Its not, it will never be. I wasnt alive around that time but I understand and respect the quality of WI cricket in the 80s in particular.

The Indian side 2001 cannot beat the current version of Indian team coz of bowling quality.  However since it is a hypothetical scenario if 2001 team gets everything that has been given to current side like best in class Video analysts & every single thing that BCCI has poured into current team to make it the best..  The 2001 side would smash the daylights of them...  Just coz of the talent those guys had.

The Aussie 2001 side is GOAT team of that era..  That was a unbelievable streak that was running on..  Current Aussie side bowling attack is great as well but they fall short on batting front spectacularly.  If same Criteria is applied like giving every modern facility to that team..  They will bash the current Aussie side to oblivion.

Nostalgia is one thing but we can't rule out the crucial factor of technology & best in class facilities current sides enjoy...  Which previous era teams don't had

India of 2020, would wallop Aussies of 2001 at home.

In Aussie Condtions it will actually be a close series with Aussies winning.

Assuming dunderheaded moron isn't kaptaan. At home no one beats India in India.

That 2001 Aussie side would smash our current team 4-0 in our backyard. Laxman played a freak knock in 2001 but not in 2004 and McGrath/Warne/Gillespie won the series for Australia at that time.

Australian world domination ended in 2011 World Cup, it's been 10 years so most people have forgotten how terrifying that side was.

Yea no. That Australia side would get but here's badly vs India in India. No chance.

Remember T20, odi and tests. So players have to adpaat to way more formats. Much harder now.

Back then plenty of teams used to play tour games before an important official series.

People love to overrated the past due to nostalgia. That 2001 team thrived off beating weak bowling attacks except south Africa.

Babar Azam being a better batsman than Virat Kohli as said in another forum sounds more realistic than 2001 team thriving against weaker bowling attacks.

You clearly have forgotten 16 consecutive test wins by Steve Waugh and Ponting. Talking about weak bowling attacks, I have watched how Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden hammered Shoaib Akhtar at his prime in early 2000s, never watched any other side dominate fast bowlers like that.

That's Shoaib. Current bowling attack of India is way better than Pakistan's 2000 era attack.

They are never beating India in India. They would win in Australia yes but with India's bowling it will be a close game.

I have watched them all play and apart from s.arfrica there was no other great bowling attack at the time I'm tests.

Walsh and Ambrose were way past primes after 97 ish.

36 all out itni jaldi bhool gaye? We won in Australia but it was not a comprehensive win but a hard fought one. And considering how our batsmen flop against lateral movement and spin, Kasprowicz/Gillespie/Warne would run through this batting blindfolded in our home conditions.

They wouldn't win one game let alone a series. Warnes spin will never be an issue for our batsmen. Since when do we get lateral movement in India?

36 all out in a pink ball test not red ball. It can happen. Pink ball behaves differently.

England lost to us in 1.5 days.

Even current Australia would come close to beating 2001 Australia.

I see absolutely no chance for 2001 to win in India.

I am talking about all players at their peaks. 2001 faced a weaker bowling attack. Bowling wish you games. This Indian bowling attack is ATG level. Not only do you have to deal with Shami umesh and bumrah. Then you have Ashwin Jadeja as well. It's terrifying for any team.

In Australian Conditions again this attack would trouble their batsmen alot. 2001 never played under new rules with drs, advanced camera footage etc. No more home umpire bias.
