Most good batsmen look elegant at crease including Gavaskar (technically strong too), Tendulkar (technically strong too), and VVS

Best looking Indian batsman at the crease over a period of time that I have seen is Sachin; at their respective peak, probably VVS (esp. good at finding the gaps "elegantly")

Azhar was good too but depended heavily on the leg side and could look ugly v bouncers (played "tennis shots" at times)

Wrongly victimized? Muslim card? Riots? Hindu-Muslim blah blah blah

@sandeep @asterix @Austin 3:!6 this OP is simply trolling now, we don't need such threads on cricket talk. We hardly discuss religion in cricket unless there is some genuine reason or jovial stuff. This kind of baseless speculation plus fake news (like the HC judgement) drags down forum quality. IMO this poster deserves a few warnings at least, let him peddle this nonsense in green ghetto, ICF can do without such specimens and their inane ramblings.

I agree.  But I don't want to take such a decision unilaterally.

Azharuddin is definitely one of the most stylish and elegant batsman ever to play cricket. Any one who saw him bat and not born after the match fixing era will agree to that. In fact had he not been caught, he was definitely a unique icon player whose batting would have been talked about even today.

Now 2nd part of the question. No! He was an A grade criminal mind and he fixed and along with  Wasim was one  of the  king pins of the fixing era. I have more sympathy for Cronje who paid a bigger price for a relatively lesser crime than Azhar. Obviously crime  is a crime  but who should lose more the henchman (Cronje) or the Don (azhar) who ordered the hit?

Now too bad Harsh Thakur and global.baba were not the Indian version of justice khayyum (I think that’s what his name was) or else Azhar would have ben let off for being our fav batsman but thank god there was somewhat relatively more honest investigation here. Not saying some of the evidence is probably wasn’t  buried and locked away from public but again relatively more honest investigation compared to Pdosis.

That guy should be thankful he remained captain for a decade. The decade which was worst in Indian cricket history hands down. Even after getting caught fixing, he became a MP and now heads a state cricket board.

Compare that with Kapil Dev, who has been perennially shunned by the BCCI for basically endorsing just one season of a legal cricket tournament.

Not only being captain for long, but when  because of his performances and suspicion of things like the 96 world cup (also he was such a poor captain we only had one overseas win in sri Lanka),  Sachin was made captain, the selectors didn't give Sachin one single player he asked for, used to ignore him in selections and used to consult azhar to determine who to pick. They also used to decide things like batting order

Azhar formed  group and openly defied Sachin strategy and azhar and his chamchas in team played many suspicious shots where team collapsed from winning positions, playing shots when not needed. Some instances of these collapsed are being 201 for 3 in an odi and then losing

Then within just 12 months, they said Sachin was poor captain and dropped him. This despite having series like south Africa and west indies which azhar had never won before.  Now at that time not only was Azar in poor form but was involved in some suspicious outs and runs outs to an extent that the selectors even needed to have a meeting with him about those run outs. One of his really ridiculous run out was in sharjah where we lost by 41 runs. But still they sacked Sachin and made azhar the captain immediately

The reason selectors gave the media was that now Azhar was a married man so he will be more mature and sober (am serious, this was the actual reason given by selectors) . Forget that Sachin and ganguly were married men at that time too.

There was a lot going on then and it was said bookies were finding it impossible to fix with Sachin in charge. I have no doubt there was a lot of selectors involvement in the whole fixing thing along with Azhar who was their main man on field. Sachin was told some players had to play at all costs. He even tried sacking azhar for nit listening to him but he was immediately brought back after 4 matches and Sachin given ultimatum to play him. In the end it was Sachin who was booted out of captaincy
