Have a problem when people call Ravichandran Ashwin all-time great: Sanjay Manjrekar

Recommended Posts

What are some criteria for ATG?

A certain avg under unhelpful conditions?  A certain SR under unhelpful conditions?  A certain # of wkts under unhelpful conditions? A certain # of MOMs and MOSs?  Based on some combo of above, be among the best 3 in their particular specialty (off-spin, in this case)?

There is so much subjectivity and everybody has their own biases, memories, feelings and emotions when talking about these individual performances.  It is better to leave these comparisons aside and just enjoy team wins.  For me, that one Sydney innings alone (39* off 128) alone is enough to elevate him to the stratosphere of Indian cricket.

Warne picked off the scraps. From McGrath.

Ashwin is greater than Warne. Put it that way. Period.

that day u said aussies t20 side that i made lack power hitter and that side included - gilly, warner, finch, watson, maxwell, symonds

What Australian side did u see play ?? U must have seen CSK of last seen and yellow might have confused you...also u must have mistaken chawla for warne

They have decent power hitting. Not enough to beat w.indies. there is a reason why they could never win a t20 WC.

not winning t20 is due to other reason, power hitting hasnt been much of a problem for them

Pak has won t20 and power hitting wasnt a strong area for them , SL another one

Manjrekar is correct, Ashwin is not ATG

400+ test wickets, a feat achieved by only 16 players in test history

400+ test wickets under 25, a feat achieved by only 9 bowlers in test history, only the second spinner with that feat so far.

Those are legit ATG numbers.

At a basic level, an ATG, whether world or national, should meet both these conditions:

a) Be considered to be good enough to be successful in any era (many top cricketers are)

b) Can be considered for a place in the world (or national for national ATG) 11

Right now, no Indian spinner is in the league of either Warne or Murali, who are in a league of their own for a world 11 slot, IMO ... To be an Ind ATG, Ashwin would be one of the options if an off spinner is needed competing with likes of Prasanna and Bhajji

Ashwin is an offspinner, he is not competing against Warne or Murali who were wrist spinners.Murali was freak and chucker but that debate is for another day.  The argument is Ashwin has been outbowled by like Ali while true to some extent  but is more an indicitment on Indian batsmen. Warne and Murali were outbowled by many spinners  Indian spinners in India.

Ashwin after 2015 when healthy has been a very very good bowler in all conditions. He gets lefties out for fun on any wicket. So what Manjerkar is saying is utter nonsense, he used Axar Patel's reference to down play Ashwin's achievements in India which is ridulous in itself. It is like saying Steyn is not great becuase Mohd Abbas has better avg in UAE. He is an ultimate idiot is saying Ashin is not a ATG.

What Ashwin has already achieved with both bat and ball is legendary. He will the first legit offspinner in any world eleven given how well he bats. Players like him and Jadeja are gold, they should be treasured for the value they bring to the test team.

Wonder how Warne fared in India. The toughest place to tour and boy did he not perform well.

Ash did well in Australia. Better comparatively.
