Siraj has played an Unofficial Test for India A in England  ... and picked up 7 wickets in that match.

His wickets include Cook, Burns, Malan, S.Curran and Woakes.

Check some latest updates on internet..talking about 4 pacers and Ashwin in 11.

I think this 11 will be changed ..jaddu sitting out for shardul or Siraj.

TM can always niggle out one of the spinners (though Jadeja can play as an AR) … at this point, esp. if the pitch has grass, it is probably a dumb decision by TM to not play the 4th pacer (Siraj)

PS Thakur is not in the squad so out of scope at this point

4th pacer can't be Siraj, not another #11 please, any way we can sneak in Thakur in the squad of 15?

Not  picking him in the 15 now seems to be deliberate. Helps the TM avoid the headache.

For ICC tournaments, don't think teams are allowed to pick anyone outside the 15 unless a injury replacement has been approved by the ICC

Umesh should be niggled out.

I honestly don't understand this. Why would you need 4 seamers if conditions are really helpful for them. Aren't 3 more than sufficient?

Below is one explanation (which I wrote to someone):

"Ideally, team selection should depend  upon the quality of players you currently have and not on set formulas (unless picking an ATG team which provides many options).

One of Ind’s key strengths is its pace bowling and in pace bowler friendly conditions, strengthen the strength esp. considering the quality of pacers (don’t forget teams like WI played 4 pacers too). The quality of the 4th pacer and his ability to influence the game with the ball is better than what Ind’s batting options can at #8.

Also don’t forget that in the last 6-7 tests in Eng and NZ that Ind played in, its only win came through the performance of the 4th pacer. The chances of 1 out of 4 pacers having a great game is higher than 1 out of 3 if conditions favor such bowlers. "

It's like saying "the wicket is an absolute road so we need 8 specialist batsmen in the 11".

That is not an accurate parallel. Because in test cricket, most teams play 4 specialist bowlers in some combination. Playing the 4th seamer is a bowling combination discussion

Your example of playing 8 specialist batsmen would be similar to a discussion on playing a couple of extra bowlers (say 6 specialist bowlers)

Jadeja is playing in place of Pandya. He is not there as a specialist spinner. Jadeja can do much better with both bat and ball than Pandya on any given wicket. This should have been the formula for Indian long time ago, Jadeja can hold his own with bat against any number 7 which India can offer.

Ashwin becomes a must as a spinner given number of lefthanders NZ have in their lineup. I don't know why people are making such a fuss about two spinners.
