Have pujara, kohli, rahane REALLY replaced dravid, sachin and vvs

Recommended Posts

I have followed Ind cricket extensively from 1990s to maybe the 2011 WC and now follow it in a selective manner

Sachin, Dravid and Laxman played a lot of games and have their share of failures (even in SL)

When these 3 were playing, It was refreshing to see guys like Sehwag turn things around with their high SR batting, helping Ind win a series for the first time in Pak. Showed how to play spin in SL, when these 3 failed to measure up. These 3 were likely to fail against strong bowling attacks (apart from a good inning here or there in a series). These 3 also played among the strongest batting line ups that Ind has fielded involving players like Ganguly, Sidhu, Gambhir, etc., in various series

Today, guys like Pujara have put their bodies on the line to help Ind win 2 consecutive series in Aus, where Ind never won a series before. Kohli has hit multiple 100s in tough series

In 98/99, there was an Asian Test championship. The final was played b/w Pak & SL … Ind’s notable failure was the Kol test v Pak - Link

At times, you even felt what if Ind had a batsman like a Lara (who used to surprise you with big knocks) or a S Waugh (who did great in mid to late 90s including hitting a 200 in WI. His ability to fight it out in the middle was well known)

I think they've been decent replacements. Indian batting has come a long way from the times when low impact plodders who used to be outbatted by the likes of Kirmani against strong Aussie/NZ attacks were considered "ATGs". At least these guys won't go through nearly 50 Tests against non-minnows without contributing to a single win :dontknow:.

VVS Laxman was known for those pressure knocks especially overseas.

Wins are a function of bowling attacks

Give them Agarkar,Nehra and likes and we won't even save tests

No

Our bowling has gotten way better but these days we lose Tests due to batting mostly

It's not like batsmen in srt, Dravid, laxman time we didn't lose because of batting. No one can't forget getting out at 76 at home or 100 all out scores. Even in England, we won two tests in England with these greats one in 2002 and one in 2007. With current bats, we did same one in 2014 and one in 2018. Even against Aus, we won just 1 test in 2003 and 1 in 2007-08. So just 2 tests.

in 2002 we scored 628  and in 2007 we scored 450+ in overcast conditions. In 2007 we could have won 3rd Test if Dravid enforced follow on.We scored 600+

How many times we see that nowadays?

Give that batting this bowling and we'll see lot more wins

Test series loss in even Zim in 1998 Link

This match is not relevant to this thread if your point is the oldies were bad.
Dravid was the best batsman of this match (from both sides) and there is no VVS. It does not prove anything about this thread.

100 and 66 all out in SA in 1996 Link  :broken_heart:

Again this match does not talk much about this thread either.

Dravid was in his first year of test cricket and there is no VVS.

Only thing, this match and the last one shows is that SRT failed and team India failed along with him.

There is Ganguly and Azhar in that line up. As long as the majority are playing, along with equivalent batsmen, it shows that those batting line ups had a fair share of failures

True. But Ganguly is not really a test specialist. He has some memorable knocks here and there but he kept his place (in 2000s) mostly due to his captaincy and him being a great ODI player. He came back in around 2007 with some good test level knocks but that is only at his fag end.

Azhar was well past his prime by summer of 1996. He has some good knocks here are there (like the one against Aus in 98 at Eden and some knocks agains SA) but overall I never was confident about him during that era. Anything from him appeared as bonus.

I am not saying earlier people were flawless. My comparison is only for the 2001-2011 era Dravid/SRT/VVS that we used to feel proud about. Are the present bunch just replacements of them is the question.
