Even if they were not teaching athletics, they could take credit if they provided free training facilities, coaching etc along with some formal education to get the athletes ready for life after sports (the US NCAA model). Pan-India phenomenon. Nothing too different in college, sports (except maybe cricket) is an alien concept for most Indians right from a young age.
