I am in favour of dropping both Pujara & Rahane, it's been long overdue. But Pujara deserved a long rope because he won India a historic series in Aus. 

Rahane OTOH continues his glorious trend of scoring in one match & going missing in others. Such inconsistent performances underpin his mediocre career spanning 75+ tests. A declining Pujara still has the quality of scoring consistently when he got his touch back this series, something Rahane is incapable of doing.

Pujara also played a part in Sydney and Gabba this year. Overall more runs than Rahane that series.

 

Rahane isn't captaining so batting should be only criteria

Twice. First, when he scored 500+ runs and, second (though to a lesser extent than the first), when he hit 3 50s in last 2 tests to help Ind draw and win a test. Also played the new ball well in the first two tests in general.

Pujara has double the runs of Rahane even in this series. Pujara and Rahane are just not even comparable. Rahane has barely done anything in last 5 years for someone batting at easier position of 5. Rahane is a one good innings a series player. He is as mediocre as it gets. He has been rubbish in India as well.

rahane  should not play the  last test for sure.  After that   both   pujara & rahane should be dropped  or at the least  gradually  phased out
