Forget about ECB here.  We somehow deflect our anger towards them here and ignoring the fact there was still a chance to play after all were tested negative.  If India was 1-2 i bet my bottom dollar India would not have pulled out. If they had done fans would not have been happy one bit. ECB cancelling a tour that never started is different from cancelling  mid way through. Looks like this can be used as a tool in the future. India could have walked out during the middle of the 4th test once Shastri tested positive. That didn't happen. So the last minute move seems to be arbitrary. Only thing i know so far from Dinesh Karthik is "they were tired there was no  physio since the one that was available got covid".  There was an option of flying another physio from India.  Besides of all the players one "SENIOR" player expressed concerns about playing. Not all.  Everyone else was willing to play the test. ECB chairman did speak to "High profile" player as per reports. Based on the reports Vihari or SKY was going to replace him. So a middle order player. Who is "high profile" in the middle order.  Rat or Pujara ?  This definitely was not a collective decision. It was a decision by an individual and rest merely followed him.

You can't fly in replacements without quarantine!

Players made the call. Not the Board or even team management. One player by all accounts.  Their explanation is sketchy at best.   Day before the match we all thought match would proceed if tests came back negative. It was negative.

Infact that was what conveyed. With 2 hours before the toss it was cancelled.  Indians are divided over this issue as well. Many are angry at Ravi shastri at this point.

Looks like you are angry because Ashwin was finally named in the 11 but the test got cancelled.

Irrelevant drawing of parallels of a domestic game with international tests as, currently, the series is undecided with BCCI offering to play the 5th test on its next tour to Eng.

The matter if it is to be decided by ICC, both the boards are expected to abide by the verdict - either cancelled/abandoned or forfeited.

The more pertinent issue is that BCCI itself mentioned that “players (Kohli and Rohit taking up negotiations) refused to play” (something to that order), so moving away from the test may not have been BCCI’s idea in the first place.

Negative test did not mean much. It just meant they were not positive then but keeping incubation period in mind close contacts of the physio namely Bumrah, Shami, Umesh, Siraj, Ishant, Jadeja, Rohit, Pujara, Pant couldn't have played that game. They would have to be isolated like they isolated the close contacts of Shastri.

Shastri tested positive much before that. Why did they continue playing. After all Kohli did accompany Shastri to the book fair.

BCCI wasn't playing, so, decision was always with players.

That one player could be rat, Rohit, or Pujara. IIRC, Rohit had some problems and he made use of physio extensively. He was the best player this series and missing him would have made a dent on the Indian team. Also we don't know what transpired after that. Maybe other players were concerned following this senior player. It seems you are indulging in mental speculation

Whole team accompanied Shastri to the book launch. They played because they played. It was also their decision. Not playing was also their decision. I myself was surprised when it came out that Shastri and support staff is isolated and they are still playing. Even that could have been the end of the tour itself but it was commendable that they finished the test. Shastri wasn't that close a contact as the physio who would be on their face. Shastri was tested positive on 5, physio 9. So it was only 3 days in between.

Given that Vihari or SKY was going to replace him it could either be Kohli or Pujara. Not Rohit as he was the opener. I don't trust Pujara skipping a test match with tests being his only format. So it has to be Rat that pulled the strings. Bumrah was going to be rested anyway due to workload not duet to COVID.  They basically exploited the covid situation to skip the test.

Virus spread to distant island where hardly any human beings live. You imply there was no possibility it could transmit unless they are extremely close to each other?  Besides Shastri never appears to maintain any distance  or wear mask in public places.  A guy who doesn't maintain distance in public places is going to maintain distance in close quarters? I doubt so. They were so lucky they didn't catch the virus from Ravi.

They were not in any bubble. They were roaming around right through the tour. HOw do you catch virus if you are in a "bubble". Explain to me. It has to come from the outside. Especially physio catching the virus and not others.  Nasser did point out the IPL schedule was one reason. If this is going to be the defacto standard they should cancel a series as soon as one person is tested positive. or atleast not play until the incubation period ends.

Any reason the physio would have to be flown in and couldn't be one of the many qualified physios already in the country?

Most important thing is they didn't have the team to take field. Bumrah, Shami, Umesh, Ishant, Siraj, Rohit, Pujara, Jadeja, pant could not have played.

You don't get it. Do you? When Shastri was positive, Bharat Arun, Nitin Patel Sridhar were deemed his close contacts. Not others. So they got isolated. Here players were deemed close contacts of the physio. This is standard procedure. Very similar to what happened in SL when Krunal Pandya was tested positive and 8 of his close contacts were isolated. Rest played last two T20s. It was a depleted team where Bhuvneshwar batted at 6.

"close contacts" is a loose definition.  Kohli attended book launch on August 31st with Shastr.  Shastri tested for covid on 4th or 5th meaning he observed symptoms before that.  What are the odds Kohli didn't catch as well? Why was he not considered "close contact".
