Both the new teams have their squads now!! It was exciting to see them at the auction, pursuing different but in some areas (focus on AR) overlapping strategies. Let's dive into their auction performance with an understanding that with 10 teams a) not many teams will have a perfect squad, and b) there is no common strategy or formula for making a team

LSG  - KL, Stoinis, & Bishnoi in the kitty

The team was determined to get its 11 sorted out on Day 1. QdK was a great pick. Straight away, it had a superb L-R opening combination. Other major picks include Holder to go with Stoinis, and pacer Avesh Khan. To support the core of KL, QdK, Stoinis, Holder, Bishnoi, & Avesh, you have Pandey, Hooda, Krunal, & Wood - all players with a traceable record in IPL and/or international cricket. Like all teams, it has a mix of filler players. Ankit Rajpoot appears to be the local/UP player quota pick. In that case, could have gone with Raina as well.

LSG is a very good batting team with bowlers who can support the batsmen well.

GT - SDP (Hardik), Rashid, & Gill in the kitty

To be frank, it took me some time to understand its auction strategy. The team did not bid for Cummins, Rabada & Boult, but managed to get Shami from set 1. As a great alternative to Rabada & Boult, they got Lockie, who is probably a smart pick considering that he can be more useful at various stages of the game. The bowling attack already looked phenomenal for IPL. Later, the team added Alzarri Joseph, who is still breathing fire like a rejuvenated dragon, and the young left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmed. Bowling has versatility with a lot of options.

Later the team was involved in a bidding war with SRH for Abhishek Sharma. And then again with CSK for Tewatia, which it won. Here you could see that they were attempting to bring in a domestic left-handed multi-skilled player in the 11. First, GT lost Krunal to LSG. Then Abhishek to SRH. Therefore, for Tewatia, it went all out.

The other focus appeared to be on upcoming Indian domestic players. GT went for Abhinav Sadarangani, Sai Kishore, Sai Sudarshan, & Yash Dayal (left-arm pace option). You want IPL to showcase talented domestic players so can't complain about it. I did not know much about these players so I went on YT to look for their videos and I liked what I saw. Unlike many upcoming domestic players in other teams, many of these players will get an opportunity to play in the GT's 11.

In the WK segment, GT passed on Gurbaz and McDermott, and even Convey, who could have fit with the team. Preferring the experience (as it was probably seeking to mix youngsters with some experienced players) of Saha and Wade. Saha is a terrific glovesman, so from a keeping PoV, you can't complain. Additionally, he can open the batting too to go all out in PP, allowing the team to take more chances while risking the wkt of a relatively fringe batsman. Wade, of course, can be played both in the top order (#1-3) and in the middle order (#4-7). Since many Aus players may be unavailable for the initial part of IPL, GT could focus on opening with Saha, giving him a relatively longer run and creating consistency in the tournament. Saha would be determined to show that he still has it in him. Wade can be played too depending upon other overseas options. With Saha and Wade, GT appears to have accounted for one right handed batsman and one left handed batsman.

Like all teams, GT has a fair share of filler players in Vijay Shankar (who again could be eager to prove a point), Gurkreet, Sangwan, & Aroon. Another interesting pick was Miller. I thought that GT could have gone with RVD but it appears as if the team was filling a specific role with Miller - a left handed, lower middle order, high strike rate batsman.

As for other exciting picks - there is Roy in the top order and Drakes, who is also a left arm medium pace option, in the lower middle order! One is an experienced campaigner, while the other is just starting out so eager to showcase his talent.

GT is basically about attacking bowling and impact batting, along with showcasing the talents of upcoming cricketers and some out of favor experienced campaigners eager to prove a point. For impact batting, you have Roy, SDP, Abhinav, & Drakes, along with Wade/Miller. For attacking bowling, you have Lockie, Shami, Joseph,&  Rashid, along with Noor and Drakes, and upcoming domestic cricketers Yash Dayal & Sai Kishore. This is a good opportunity for Gill to go for 500+ runs in a season, and Tewatia to make an impactful comeback. If this team gets going, it will be interesting to watch!

Probable starting 11 for the first few games (excluding Aus players):

LSG: KL, QdK, Lewis, Pandey, Hooda, Krunal, Holder, Gowtham, Wood, Bishnoi, & Avesh

GT: Saha, Roy, Gill, SDP, Abhinav, Drakes/Miller, Tewatia, Rashid, Shami, Lockie, & Kishore/Dayal

PS or Saha, Roy, Gill, Shankar, SDP, Abhinav, Tewatia, Rashid, Shami, Joseph/Noor, & Lockie

Noor looks good. Look at those revs on the ball. He will be caught on a wrong day and go for a lot of runs as he seems to be slower but on his day will run through some line ups.

Have a feeling he is going to catch sub 100 specialists RCB and MI on an off day.

If you have bowlers like Rashid and Noor bowling in tandem, it also makes sense to have someone experienced like Saha as the WK

Yeah. For mystery spinners you need a classical wicket keeper. Saha we know is quality especially against spin.

Yeah, it is difficult to find a better keeper to spinners than Saha … GT’s auction strategy is coming together like a crossword puzzle

Gujarat can also get Shankar for Tewatiya and get an off spinner to compliment Rashid Khan too instead of another bat.

If Shankar is played, GT can even go like this:  Saha, Roy, Gill, Shankar, SDP, Abhinav, Tewatia, Rashid, Shami, Joseph/Noor, & Lockie
