Rohit Sharma: I want middle order to prepare for '10 for 3' situations

That's the right approach, the top 3 in the last 5 years has  won more matches for India than the middle order did starting from 1970s.

The middle order (the hyped youngsters) now need to show that they are capable of winning matches on their own just like how top3 won us matches single-handedly.

Rohit looks very excited and he is talking about the real problems in our Loi teams, great interview.

The middle order got almost nil practice leading up to big cups. The top 3 played series after series and hogged strike till 35 to 40 overs. Maximum pant etc got was batting at desth practicd

Then they are suddenly exposed in important semis and league matches in situations they havent even faced

I think rohit is planning to address that issue and build youngsters

This idiot Rohit Sharma will be an even worse captain than Kohli.

He is in the last stages of his career and miraculously is given everything he wanted from BCCI.

To make matters worse, he is super scared to experiment and give chances to youngsters. We saw that already when he brought back Axar, Chahal and Ashwin in T20 useless bilateral tour that too in India. Could have given poor guy Rahul Chahar an opportunity to gain back some confidence.

Plus, he didn't allow Venky Iyer to open the batting so he can hog all the strike and score runs in batsman friendly Indian conditions to save his spot.

If we really look at WT20 worldcup, he was prime candidate to be dropped until he suddenly was given chance to play against Namibia, Scotland, Afghanistan to get back to form when Surya, Kishan, Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Chahar were dropped after just one failure.

I laugh at all the fans who forget past so easily. Sure enjoy the short satisfaction of Kohli's downfall but if Kohli purposely fails at #3 in ODI's under Rohit's captaincy, it will be impossible for India to win 50 over worldcup as Kohli is an ATG batsman in 50 overs cricket even with pathetic form he's been in.

The underlying problems are still not fixed. If Rohit will hog all the overs in even practice and bilateral games and then choke in pressure knockouts, he has no business expecting middle order to fire in impossible situations. No team can come back from 10/3 in a knockout game even if it's Australia or England.

You can't really prepare for 10/3 kind of situations. Just make sure numbers 4,5,6,7 get regular chances to bat in top order especially against weaker opposition and get a chance to score big hundreds. And the change has to begin from the captain, who needs to show more flexibility and not be rigid about his batting position.

In Ishan, SKY, Rahul, Iyer and Pant, we have a strong enough top/middle order which can (and has) won matches in bilateral series. They can do it in ICC tournaments as well provided there is a proper plan for the team and not just  for the top 3.

How about taking some responsibility and leading from the front?

Rohit will soon understand , there are no free lunch here

Handling club/franchisee cricket may not be easy, but being the Captain of the Indian Team  maybe a bit more difficult than that..No? I guess so

Why would Kohli "purposefully" fail?

In all these 3 matches left arm seamer rocked us.

Amir in CT Final, Boult in WC Semi and Shaheen in WT20.

We need to improve batting against left arm seamers..especially Rohit himself.

It's time that we also invest on left arm seamers ourselves. Indian limited overs bowling is pretty one dimensional and we can do with a left arm quick. Our batsmen can also practice against this kind of bowling.

Suryakumar has great range of shots but he is not a pressure player. Iyer and Pant are most suited among youngsters to relieve the team from tricky situation like 10/3 or 20/3 and help win India the game.

I would pick Surya ahead of Iyer all day, any day.  Temperament, as well as skill.

Its not close.

He deserves a chance at least. I don't think we will go past semis anyway but may be sarma will surprise all of us.  Not a big believer in naya india  and swarna yuga bot bs .

Pant hasn't shown the temperament to be that kind of a player; he seems to get stuck between his natural instinct and the need to play longer and tends to fail at both in these types of scenarios. We need to build similar to the aussie ODI middle order of later 90s/00s; a nice balance of batsmen w the ability to attack and go long (having Gilchrist helped).

Agree. He doesn't say this as an opener of the side. He says this as a captain. Otherwise he could have made the same statement before becoming a captain.

then why doesnt he bat in middle order. There are plenty of options for opening

good thinking because he'll be one of the 3 in 10 for 3.

He failed in first two matches of this World T20, the middle order couldn't rescue us. He failed in World Cup semi-final, the middle order couldn't rescue us. So, he is right. Middle order needs practice. Pretty sure if he didn't score those 5 centuries, India would have failed to reach semis in 2019.

Can't blame someone for a few failures when has performed in so many matches, can't expect him to win every match alone. It's not like he has never scored in play-offs, he has a hundred in Champions trophy.
