So much strong and powerful batting lineup.

No tuk tuk batsmen either.

India bat deep here, every player has a 50 at least recently too.

Think Shaw is a Sehwag type of batsman. Way too loose to succeed as an opener in test matches in SENA countries. Either needs to change his gameplay like Rohit or Rahul (who were usually very aggressive batsmen against pace) or will need to stick to LOIs.

Some proviso

Rohit is playing on a series by series basis. Luckily for him, the next couple of seasons are lined up with home tests. But be mentally prepared if he completely shits himself when the next cycle of big overseas series come around.

RAT is cooked as much as Rahane and Pujara but his PR and record means he'll get a pass for 12 months minimum. If he produces some random score here and there then this team would be saddled with him for another 12-18 months. I am expecting the team to carry RAT the passenger till 2024. It'll raise an almighty stink but people in charge would pretend they don't smell any RAT.

Mayank is another spud who's been found out. People go on about home tests but if you want an opener who can murder attacks at home, go with Shaw. Shaw is 10 times the batsman plus he's 10 years younger.

Yes, Vihari has been hard done by but does this mean TM/Selectors are going to overcompensate by keeping him in the XI even over someone worthier? Something to look out for.

My preferred XI against the Sri Lankas

KL

Rohit

Gill

Kohli

Vihari/Iyer

Pant

Jadeja

Ashwin

Axar

Siraj/Prasidh

Bumrah/Umesh/Shami

I agree about Mayank but Iyer is in same boat. Would prefer Vihari at 3 and Sundar at 5. Gill can be backup for now

Move KLR to #3, where he is better suited and have Shaw open. that would be my take, with Gill batting at 4.
If everyone is attacking,it is a recipe for disaster.
Out Purane, In Iyer and Vihari. We need players like Vihari who can hold the innings together.
Out Mayank, In Gill
Rohit and Rahul should still open

Well we will see with Vihari.... in 36 a.o. I was hoping Vihari would "hold things together" for at least half an hour to stabilize things. No such luck.

But he did block well with Ashwin in Sydney.

We will see with Vihari and Iyer.... Being "the men" overseas is not as easy as scoring in A team or in India.

Tests Outside Asia ....

1. Rahul

2. Rohit

3. Gill

4. Washington

5. Kohli / Shreyas

6. Pant

7. Jadeja

8. Shardul

9. Bumrah

10. Shami / Siraj  (  rotate )

11. Prasidh

Tests in Asia ....

1. Rahul

2. Rohit

3. Gill

4. Washington

5. Shreyas

6. Pant

7. Jadeja

8. Ashwin

9. Axar

10. Siraj

11. Bumrah / Prasidh  (  rotate )

....  Try Kohli only in tests outside Asia to see if he has resurrected himself as a batsman after giving up captaincy ... groom young batters in Asia

....  Washington must be tried as a specialist batsman

....  It's high time we groomed a tall, quick, bounce bowler like Prasidh

.... Play old man Shami only in away tests, that too by rotation with Siraj, so that he can fire on all cylinders.

.... Young pacers should be groomed in home tests as spinners do the bulk of the job at home

.... Remove Rahane and Pujara from the squad.

.... Remove Ishant and Umesh from the squad.

Great post as usual from you :hatsoff:

I am supportive of all these choices as it improves Team India.

The bigger question though is if Ashwin/Pant are captain do you feel they would replace Kohli?

Ashwin will, Pant should, given the treatment he has received from Kohli over the years. I think KL will play Kohli.

No captain in their right mind would pick Kohli in Asia given the quality of spin. Kohli is finished here.

he is still too big for anyone to drop at this stage. will need more extended failures to do so. let's first hope that purane are booted out - I am not sure of even this happening

In Asia, Kohli cant play spin better than a number of players outside the team at the moment. He should be dropped based on that.
