Numbers can be deceiving. Some of his innings are like Dhoni like. Play slow right till the end and make up in the end like he did vs NZ. He was like 15 runs in the first 13 balls. Then he hit a full toss for a six in 20th over and  couple of 2s. 26 in 19 balls. It looks good in the end. Even in the canberra despite his gigantic 19th over  he was going slow from 14th till 18th.  12 runs in 12 balls. You want someone to start hitting from the word go. Glad he did in the last match against SL albeit with a set platform.  Either that or Rohit has clearly instructed everyone to go after the bowling which is good.

Its a risk reward and in canberra if he would have started to hit after india was down and got out, india would have been all out for 130 or less. Starting to hit from ball 1 should be dependent on circumstances. So the skill must be there but utilisation of skill should be subject to condition of the match and state of play.

That is precisely what Dhoni was doing most of his career. Even Manish pandey did the same. Batting slow till the end and big overs in the end.  Good that it came off. But in a 20 over game taking singles for 4 or 5 overs is not really ideal. You are fully banking on hitting quick runs of whoever is bowling the 19th, 20th over. It doesn't always come off. Rohit seems to have set the expectations apparently. Even Iyer usually slow off the blocks. Good to see him starting the onslaught early.

If everyone did that we could have had better score.

Didn't work against Pakistan.  Also won't work on flatter pitches where par score is higher. Expecting something like what we saw from Venky Iyer and SKY other day. They scored 81 runs in 5 overs. They did not pause at any point from 15th till 20th over.

Scored 44 not out off 23 balls in Canberra against Australia about 15 months ago and won the match for us.

Scored 26 not out off 19 balls against NZ in Dubai in the T20 WC.

his numbers are often deceiving. demonstrates late surges at times when the match result is already decided (either win or loss). He is much improved as batter, but not as hitter. If Pandu can rediscover his form and can bowl 2 overs per match in IPL, I'd rather have him In t20s. but these are two big ifs

because that was flatter. NZ game everyone struggled to get even 100 SR
