Sangakara is the other extreme. He retired at his "peak" with jayavardhana without grooming anyone and sri lankan batting fell off a cliff, became minnow level and is just now recovering. Lara did the same This is the other extreme and also selfishness. Dravid more or less retired when he just failed in a few series, Sachin stayed on for a year and few months but he was the only senior after so many other legends retired at that time and kohli and rohit and others have said his presence eased them into cricket and helped them come to terms with international and the transition. When Sachin retired the next generation was ready and firing. Retiring when you are in peak form is as selfish as hanging on too long. That is also about personal stats over country. clownkiller, Lord and SachDan 1 2 Link to comment

I don’t think anyone would retire at their peak just because they don’t want their average or numbers to drop. In that case they probably retire coz they lost that excitement to play the game which could be due to some other life events. And in that case, their performance will soon drop and that too rapidly. Still selfish not to consider impact on team and bite down and help the team groom your replacement. We all do jobs we don't like because of responsibilities. MK55 1 Link to comment

Indeed, Barrington retired in pretty good form because of his severe mental health issues. Still played like a gutsy soldier until then. MK55 1 Link to comment

MK55
The way Kohli has been struggling this series, it made me go on YouTube today to watch some back foot drives on the off side of Sachin. Kohli just doesn’t have that game or is confident enough to even attempt those shots. sage 1 Link to comment
