The meanings conveyed by idioms are often very different from what the individual words in the phrase mean. And idioms usually derive their meaning from usage. This phrase , " flatter to deceive " had a more literal meaning in older English. But with usage, a more non-literal and figuritative meaning has emerged too. It is difficult to say that this is right or this is wrong in this case. yes, in the idiomatic sense the usage is quite apt. I, on the other hand, am okay with the english usage, but not fully onboard with the cricketing sentiment. Umesh has flattered to deceive in the past, but I think he deserves to be in the larger squad. He has not bowled with a lot of pace but has nonetheless generated consistent hostility. could have had even more wkts if not for edges, dropped catches, etc.
