Lets add Prithvi Shaw to the line up. Create the un-fittest sports team ever put together.

will put KL at 3, rest order same as normal.

KL has been an opener so should be okay there

KL usually bats Better with Tail when he has no other option.  Centurion test he did the same & vs BD when he had to bat quick.

Also keeping second new ball in mind he must be there.

Kohli is fine as no 3.  Keeps him far away from Lyon if we lose early one.

If Kohli will bat at 3 , then where will Gill go ?

He also needs to be protected vs spin.

Else drop Jaiswal to no 4, make Gill open with Kohli at 3.

Jaiswal can manage the spinners.

Hoping Sarfraz scores big 100.I would love to see him bat number 5 in Australia.

KL Rahul seems to have the backing of bigwigs. You play that innings and still get picked all the time.

KL Rahul hasnt just ' been an opener' like VVS was for a small bit, he IS an opener. of his 90 test innings, 75 are as opener.

Whether we like KLR or not, is irrelevant.

What is relevant, is that management percieves him as valuable : an opener who can be shunted in the middle order AND can keep wickets, while being a decent catcher+fielder.

This means, he is seen as a utility swiss-knife by the management and barring rise of other middle order giant batsmen in India, he will play in the team for another 5-7 years.

Kohli, like Ponting, is done and has been done for a while and his fits and spurts as centurion in tests will only prolong the pain.

I think man is hanging on to get to 10K runs as his sole goal of life, but i fear by the time he gets there, he will be a 45 average dude.

Turns out Kohli not cutting is an even bigger fail for a batsman to have than Tendy not cover-driving, because Kohli isnt patient and tries to drive cutting length balls eventually, especially against spinners.

Noted openers of the past & especially top order ( aka 1st 3) batsmen have been noted to being vicious cutters : Greenidge, Sehwag, Jayasurya, Viv, etc. were the absolute pinnacle of the square cut shot in cricket. This is critical tool to have for top order batsmen, because if you are a vicious cutter, it means the bowler HAS to get BOTH length AND line on the money, because anything good length but slightly wide, will be cut to smithereens.

IMO, Kohli should just retire. He isnt motivated by his failures as a batsman, its plain to see. he has changed really nothing to correct his glaring flaw of ' mr no cut'.

He got away with it as a younger man with a better eye and more patience but now that he is less patient a batsman and his eye isnt that good, he simply isnt good enough to ' drive anyways' to good length balls that are slightly wide and succeed against most.

This, IMO, lets bowlers settle against Kohli too easily these days, as they know, if they err in line, its okay, so long as length is still good length, because you cant drive good length balls easily and mr no-cut will not punish you for good length but slightly wide deliveries. Instead he will drive and nick those or block and eventually nick those too.

The jig of ' no cut-man' is up and its been up for a while, its best we all realize this.

There is something about him that's different. His energy his body language. All conventional sense would suggest that this guy cannot succeed at this level. Even now I don't know how he will fair in Australia given his technique. But something unusual. Makes you want to back him.

He has the cuts, ramps to rattle Aussies. Strong cutters do well in Australia.

His hand eye coordination is superb.
Technique is all over but his hand eye coordination makes up for it, he is also quick to pick the lengths.
Australia don't have an extreme quick like Mark Wood, so he may do fine there. But in NZ, SA, England...things may look slightly complicated.
Perth and Gabba will be his real test, mostly will be well in Sydeny, Melbourne, Adelaide.

Hope you are right. There is cutting and there is cutting in Australia. Looks a bit locked to me unlike Rahane who was as good as any backfoot player we had from mumbai.

But then life is weird. Chanderpaul is prime example.

There's a reason the guy averaged close to 100 across 3 Ranji seasons. Yet that genius Dravid selected SKY (average of 30 odd in FC) into the Test team!

Sarfaraz has done the hard yards in domestic and knows how to pile up big runs, and should be a regular ahead of both Kohli and KL Rahul. And once Musheer Khan recovers he's another one who has potential to get into the team. Jurel also needs to be persisted with as he has the right temperament.

We've the options but it's the selectors who're holding us back just like they did in this Test by keeping out Akash Deep in favor of Siraj.

Selectors have selected him in squad, but coach, captain are preferring them
