Babus/netas are same everywhere. Just resistant to change.

Each county in each state has its electoral processes and norms. They first need a federal body of elections to have a country-wide uniform rules for voting and counting system

Totally agree with you mate. Just saying the math is important. We also need to lift a massive majority of population. So it's nature of support. How much how little. How are you going to fund it. All factors go in. TN for instance is as much a freebie economy as aby in the world. But they found a way to make the model work.

TN is a self sustaining model. Despite of freebies, they manage to grow. Whatever politics they have, TN has sucesfully managed to convert the state into a major manufacturing hub.

They are only one of three states ( the others being Maharashtra and Gujarat) which can realistically target a state GDP of 1 trillion $ in the next 3-4 years.

Respect where due.

Contrast that with WB, who are also a total freebie based political order but have no growth to speak of and rely solely on the largesse of the Centre.

Is this the end of Uddhav and also of his cousin Raj ( he won 0 seats!)?

Perhaps the Shinde Shiv Sena at some point will merge into the BJP.

I think there is more chance of the two Sena factions merging and UT coming back to Hindutva fold than Shinde Sena merging with BJP. National parties will end regional parties in the long run. If Sena merges with BJP, their political career is over.

Been celebrating all weekend. What a win....

The Pawar era is over. Long live the new era.

Three election cycles in a row, BJP has won the election. I include 2019 as they won based on pre poll alliances. Real chance that with delimitation and more urbansation Maharashtra can be a NDA stronghold.

Credit to Axis Gupta. Nailed it. Not many would have called Marathwada to the degree he did. I certainly would not have. Also nailed Jharkhand. He is back.

A lot depends on Uddhav health. Has major health issues.

BMC elections that should follow will finish him. He won seats in Mumbai city proper based on the BMC union connections.

To be fair he has taken an extra day for Haryana and West Bengal (was in phases) an got it terribly wrong.

Maharashtra he predicted with the grain and even Todays Chanakya was similar.

Where he stood out was Jharkhand. Most had it as close (as did I). He was one of the few to predict the new OBC party would suck NDA votes. NDA got 38%, UPA got 44% and the new OBC party got 6%.....

The results in Maharashtra and Jharkhand also show we are now heading for woman centric freebie culture. If delivered correctly it causes pro incumbant female vote.

BJP should be ready for AAP freebies to be announced soon. I think AAP are odds on to win. But then again I thought BJP would lose Harayana and Maharashtra (post poll deal most likely) and win Jharkhand with ease. Opposite happened.

I am afriad India is going to average 6% over the next decade economically as a result. I expect CG to roll out central freebies pre UP election 2027...

I think TN has given right kind of freebies decades back. Like mid day meals to kids.

These are what can be called as "investment freebies".

Ones like ladli behen are just bribes for votes.

I have checked it and math is way more complex behind it. If anything, we need more freebies, but better targeted. As % of GDP it is neglgiible and goes back into the economy.

Absolutely. Great day for Maharashtrians. Maharashtra could be NDA stronghold for good. They have no excuses. They have to double GDP in next 5 years

fair enough. would love to read. Same rationale behind army salaries and standing soldiers etc. Ultimately it finds its way into the economy.

Its an odd one. The rationale behind the transfer to woman etc is that it increases their respect in the home and the women directs the money towards welfare of her kids. I get the rationale behind the scheme. It improved the quality of life of those that need it the most and over time soceity etc gets more literate and benefits. MP where the scheme was launched has seen a much improved sex ratio at birth.

Issue is lack of complementary taxes to pay for that benefit. India's debt to GDP ratio is 80%. With more and more freebies, even with 6-7% growth it will result in our debt crossing 100% of GDP. We dont want to end up as Pakistan who are simply servicing debt.

If the world was booming as was the case 2002 to 2007, then fair enough you can get away with running large deficits. Sentiment would tide you over. But this is an era of political instability where you cant get away with it.

India CG and state level deficit is like 8% of GDP. If growth is sub-8% then your debt to GDP ratio will increase.
