Not just talking about one game. Thats his SR over 15 innings when all he has to do is play quick cameos. 116 is low even for someone trying to rebuild

Pant has played at varied position without a fixed role, still doing better. Also offers LHB value and better v spin

This role is the most demanding role. So i don't disagree DK has to work on it. But in order to get the best out of his role India has to get their batting order right. You cannot force him to play last 5 overs like he is only good for that.  His performance was expected to be wildly fluctuating. That is why he has to be picked as keeper not as a pure batsman. Pant on the other hand even when he is in dream form is easily trappable batsman. You don't want DK. fine. Pant is not the answer. Should have given extended run to Samson or Kishan.

That's why this can be a tough role. Can not be used as an excuse.

Now that you have picked him and no choice. Make the best use of him. If he fails you can always play Pant. Rohit utterly wasted the opportunity. Who cares if Axar gets batting practice or not. He is a freaking bowler.  DK is the batsman. So should have got more game time

Kishan is a big FTB. Also only good at opening.

Samson did well in chances he got this year.

On ability, Pant is still the best among them.

He hasn't found the range for 50 matches. So hoping that he would find in 51st, 52nd game is too risky. He may or may not find his range in T20 ever. If he fails one more time knives will be out again. Besides Pant has not proved enough to be a very hand in 19th and 20th over. Even in IPL.  DK has proved in the IPl, in internatinoals. Only downside is inconsistency. At times he just chokes himself into a scenario where the shots don't come off.  Pant's problem is not nerves. It is more execution problem. They easily trap him. Even in the short cameo against Afghanistan he got 2 lives. He didn't make use of it.

Rohit was poor for his first 80 games before he found his mojo. So it can always happen with talented players.

If Pant can be the job to bat in last 5 overs, he might well figure it out. Right now his role is not clear.

His other problem is trying to hit every ball, needs to be smarter. But overall offers more than DK unless he's very consistent.

You need 2 finishers bare minimum assuming your tail enders can slog a bit. But if you have one finisher and weak ass tail we basically rely on one batsman. Last match Pandya covered it. So you need one or two guys who can do that job. Suresh Raina type of players would be ideal.

(1) 2+ years of struggle is the only evidence I have for your question, but it is strong evidence.  Obviously, he is quite capable of doing it, as he has proven in the past.  But he is human.  His skills wane like everyone else's.  Bad habits creep in without notice.  Confidence gets shaky.  And when that happens, an athlete must step away, work the kinks out and compete to come back in, and not be handed a spot.

(2) When he is right - the question is "is he right at this moment?"  And the evidence for that is a singular innings against a deflated AFG team in an inconsequential match?  I think he can do better than that.

Yeah, Gambhir probably has some vendetta against VK.  That doesn't necessarily make this particular statement wrong.   Now, if VK comes out in the current AUS series, with the series on the line, and plays some significant knocks to lead the batting, there will be no one happier than me.

There is saying in sports Father time is undefeated .There comes a time when every player starts to loose it. If he does not perform well after this again then he needs to be kicked out of the team ASAP.He should be gone from T20 after the world cup anyways.

I still  don't think Kohli should be part of test team. I don't think he will be able to overcome his technical issues in test cricket.

I have nothing against Gambhir. But he needs to understand great players always have been/will be in future too given extra attention and extra leeway. When they are right they form back bone and building blocks for the team. If Gambhir pointed out Bhuvi's issues for last three years then I would completely understand his point of view about Kohli.

Unless Kohli has fudged his age so much that he is already 40 or above historically the age at which his struggles started is supposed to be his peak years.
