Michael Mann is one of directors that is known for his style of filmmaking and experimentation. He is also known to do a lot of research and planning for his films. Some of his films don't do as well as expected at box office but later gain a following like The Keep for example.  Below is his filmography:

Directed features
Year    Title
1981    Thief
1983    The Keep
1986    Manhunter
1992    The Last of the Mohicans
1995    Heat
1999    The Insider
2001    Ali
2004    Collateral
2006    Miami Vice
2009    Public Enemies
2015    Blackhat
TBA    Ferrari

Which are your favorite Michael Mann films?

Only ones I found decent were Ford vs Ferrari and the Kingdom. Rest are all boring yawnfests

Really?   Thought it was supposed to be a classic ?

Thought I'd pick it up but perhaps later.

Yes, it is a "classic", but not all classics stand up equally well today. Even some of Dickens' books are less appealing (e.g., David copperfield) than some others (e.g., Oliver Twist), to pick just one example

Fair.  Dickens is overrated as a writer. Tale of two cities and Oliver Twist are the only ones I liked.

he is a grade A whinger in most of his novels. Hugo was just as cumbersome, especially when one reads him in French.

they are still great writers, but somewhat overblown reputations

Happened to watch - Manhunter (1986) adapted from the novel Red Dragon . Kind of prequel to Silence of the lambs. Got interested in the first few minutes because of the intro of Hannibal Lecktor (sic) char. That scene reminds so much of SotL scene, they must have been inspired by this scene. Disappointing movie. Too much focus on style and bad soundtrack for a dark theme. Also acting by the lead was incompetent. Ed Norton’s Red Deagon based on the same novel is a better watch. Liked some parts, bad lighting (too much light) for a movie that is tagged as Horror genre.

I prefer Red Dragon over Manhunter too. Though both films are not among my favorites from the Hannibal Lecter series.

I like the Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, along with the TV series Hannibal. All three are in my collection: Silence of the Lambs on Criterion Blu-ray, Hannibal on KL 4k Blu-ray, and the Hannibal series on digital.

There is Hannibal Rising as well, which I haven’t watched it a long time but I recall that Gong Li is in it.
