Yeah even that league isnt going on anymore I think.

"The goal is to have a strong club competition in this area and improve the quality of the players for international level,” said David John who has been roped in as the Director of Odisha Hockey."

“India doesn’t have a strong club system. The problem with the domestic players is that they don’t play enough competitive matches to keep themselves ready for the big stage. The aim is to provide them a proper platform where they will play competitive hockey and hone the subtle nuances of the game,” said John.

They had a golden chance to make an impression here at Home but the preparation was poor...no back up PC specialist once Harmanpreet was off color. The only one decent striker was lost to injury and they could not just convert Penalty Corners. After the first game despite winning 4-2 it looked like this was at best good Asian games team but no where world class. Aus/Dutch/Beg would have anyways butchered them in later stage.

Some of these Punjab players are massively overrated and should be no where near the squad, Jarmanpreet shouldn't be in the squad, manjeet, sukhjeet, shamsher should not be playing, they left possibly the best young talent in the country out of the squad selvam Karthik

Hockey players need to understand that everything works in reverse in India.. as there is no sports culture, a sports can only be popular in the country only IF you WIN the World Cup or the pinnacle of the sport, THEN people start to follow it. Same thing happened with cricket.. only when we won a WC then the popularity increased.

Bhai baaki b koi khaas nhi hai. Neelam Xess was making school boy errors in defence. Abhishek Prasad looked deer caught in headlight as soon as he was under pressure.

This is so true!! We tend to totally undermine anyone who doesnt reach the top and deify whoever does.

That Olympic bronze was the best hockey that we played. Haven't seen any good hockey after that. Sreejesh the freak saved his best for that Olympic glory. He could have saved a few today if not for that injury but the attempt at goals was shocking.

We did okay in the Cwg. **** opposition mostly but at least we looked convincing. This team has choked or just not managed to turn up in a home world cup sadly.

I needed 2 hours to calm down after the way we lost it and shat the bed.

Most of them are average players, bar sreejesh, Hardik and maybe rohidas the rest just make up numbers, Indian hockey team is doing nothing great despite massive funding, dipsan should have been in the squad, midfield not creative enough

Unfortunately, Indias is a single sport nation. Hockey is not one of it.

In any case let us thank the CM of Odisha for at least trying.

Even then we haven’t won a ICC trophy for 10 years..

India is a money/fame chasing nation- once you get that there’s no personal pride left to perform.

That can be blamed on the culture. Look at Rohit, he has put on weight. Not one football player in your premier league looks so pathetic as he does.

Lol nz again.

We need to develop a sports culture. Not good enough. Nothing to do with physical ability. There are plenty of players with physical ability but if we are going to play domestic games on grass then how would that help us perform on astro in WCs?

Belgium Aussies and nedtherlands are a level above. England is on a similar level to us at the moment. Then Germany is around there too. Argentina can surprise teams but aren't consistent.

Rest are just well below.

Correct. As soon as we attain a bit of fame, it's like they stop trying. Target achieved so now they feel entitled to do as the please.

Profoundly disagree- there are hundreds of hockey clubs in the communities and universities with astro turfs everywhere in UK. Same with Germany. They have a better sporting culture than us

We are at best 8/9th best in the world when it comes to consistent results. winning some fluke games against 2nd string Dutch/Belgium/Aus sides in the Pro League doesnt mean jack shite

We as a land of yoga and meditation, always crumbles when there are pressure situations be it in big icc match or in other sports like today. Talent is not enough to win but cool and calm un tough situations is equally important.

I fear what will happen if hypothetically if Patnaik's party loses in Odisha.. the hockey team can overnight lose all its sponsorships.. has the Indian Gov thought about this eventuality?

Can't say what will happen if patnaik's party(BJD) loses.  But i dont see that happening anytime soon.   Niether Bjp nor congress has any presence here in odisha, as of now.      Coming to hockey, i think it's high time our govt takes this seriously. Afterall, it's our national game.   We saw considerable improvements in many events of the 2021 olympics (No one would hv thought about securing the gold and overall decent medals tally, by our standard).  So, it's not all doom and gloom.  As fans, we can only hope though.
